Apple to make documentary on Lewis Hamilton

March 10, 2022

Apple secures deal to make a documentary about the British Formula One icon.

Apple TV+ has acquired the rights for a feature-length documentary about seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton. The documentary is set to be directed by British director Matt Kay.

The documentary will give access to Hamilton and his team both on and off the track and also to other guest interviews. It is going to be produced by Hamilton, Penni Thow, Box to Box Films and One Community, while Richard Plepler and Scott Budnick will serve as executive producers.

Apple TV+ released a statement on the project, which read:

Hamilton has blazed an uncharted trail professionally, socially and culturally, and transformed the sport on a global scale.

Coming from a working-class family, Lewis succeeded in a sport where the odds were stacked against him but where his talent shone through, allowing him to dominate the sport for over a decade.

Hamilton is currently the only Black driver to race in the Formula 1 series. He embraced what made him different and his rise to the top of his career has made him fiercely committed to using his platform to influence positive change for future generations.

The documentary will be a part of Apple’s latest non-fiction programmes which include They Call Me Magic and an unnamed documentary about late actor Sidney Poitier among others. Apple recently also acquired the rights to the upcoming movie about Formula One racing which will star Brad Pitt and has Hamilton in a consulting role. Joseph Kosinski will be directing the movie, while legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriter Ehren Kruger are also a part of the project.

Hamilton has previously starred in the animated movie franchise Cars and also had a cameo in Zoolander 2

On the track, Hamilton will be seen in action on March 20 in Bahrain at the season-opener for the Formula One 2022 season. After losing out on his eighth world title under controversial circumstances, the Brit is eager to make sure he takes the crown home this season.
