CSK vs KKR – Match Preview

The top two teams from last year’s unique two-legged IPL season will resume hostility this season with an opening-day fixture. Based on the evidence from the two days of an action-packed auction, the Chennai Super Kings looked the happier of the two as they managed to pull off yet another successful auction, bringing in a good blend of young and experienced players, while the KKR camp, just like their on-field aggression, felt too aggressive at times while bidding for certain players and paid the price with an imbalanced squad (at least on paper).

Having failed to bring back Shardul Thakur, with their ₹14-crore purchase Deepak Chahar now sidelined with injury until at least mid-April, the CSK’s Indian fast-bowling department looks stretched all of a sudden. Although they have depth in Rajvardhan Hangargekar, KM Asif and Tushar Deshpande, the lack of experience means they’ll have to slot in someone like Chris Jordan, while Devon Conway will come in for Moeen Ali, who is a stroke player and is at his best when operating during the middle overs.

The Knight Riders, on the other hand, had a top three in red-hot form, but Alex Hales, who was in decent form throughout the Pakistan Super League, has opted out of the IPL citing family and mental well-being as key reasons, with the KKR having announced Aaron Finch as his replacement, though both Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer are in imperious form as evident from India’s recent white-ball wins over the West Indies. However, a middle order of Nitish Rana, Sheldon Jackson and Rinku Singh gives one very little hope, while over-reliance on some established yet injury-prone players like Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Varun Chakravarthy can come back to bite the team.

CSK vs KKR – Pitch Report

With the news coming in from the centre suggests that it’ll be a red-soiled surface for the first game, one can expect a bouncy and fast wicket that’ll provide a lot of assistance to aggressive fast bowlers in particular, making it imperative for the batters to be cautious during PowerPlay overs or risk losing two-to-three quick wickets, and lose that entire foundation. Furthermore, expect very little to no assistance for spin bowlers.

Batter to watch out forShreyas Iyer

The 27-year-old India international couldn’t have hit his purple patch at a better time. He hit three consecutive half-centuries against Sri Lanka in the recently concluded three-match T20I bilateral series, while he also made a swashbuckling 92 which he followed up with a score of 67 in the innings of the day/night Test match in Bengaluru. While the KKR have a formidable top three, it’ll be interesting to see whether their fragile and weak middle order can provide him the support to flourish in this setup.

Bowler to watch out forDwayne Bravo

The 38-year-old Trinidadian has been in great form with the ball, having recently picked up 18 wickets in 10 matches at an Average of 16.72 and a decent Economy of 7.78 rpo for Fortune Barishal as they finished runners-up in the Bangladesh Premier League this season. While the CSK will have the likes of Tushar Deshpande or Rajvardhan Hangargekar as a backup for Deepak Chahar to cover the Powerplay overs, they’ll be heavily reliant on the services of Dwayne Bravo during the death overs. Thus, him being in form and match-ready ahead of the new season is a huge boost for the Men in Yellow.
