SRH vs RR Match Predictions

Both the SRH and the RR will be looking to start their campaigns with a win as both teams will be fielding relatively fresh new squads after a series of disappointing runs in the last few seasons.

The Rajasthan Royals had a good outing at the auction table, and after a long time, they have a team capable of challenging for the Playoff spots. The SunRisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, after backing youth and familiarity over experience and genuine match-winners, have also built a squad capable of challenging for that final fourth spot, although a lot of things will have to go their way for that to happen.

Wickets in the MCA, Pune, have traditionally been one offering assistance to both bowlers and batters. The new ball always does a bit upfront, while the spinners get enough purchase during the middle overs to be in the game throughout. Looking at the top orders of both the teams, the Royals look to be the better of the two. As far as bowling is concerned, the likes of Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Umran Malik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will all come in handy on a ground like the MCA with their pace and swing.

If we look at the composition of both the middle orders, the Royals bat deeper than the SunRisers, with Sanju Samson, Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag coming in at Nos. 4,5 and 6, respectively, while both Nathan Coulter-Nile and Ravichandran Ashwin can also provide decent batting lower down the order. Although the SRH too have enough options themselves, with Washington Sundar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar coming in at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, there are still serious questions regarding the three batters batting ahead of them in the lineup.

Pitch Report

Being a fresh wicket in an open-ground stadium, there will be swing on offer for seamers in both innings early on into the Powerplay overs. Moreover, historically it is known to be a surface that’s generally good for batting but starts slowing down as the game progresses. Yet, teams have enjoyed success in both batting first or chasing. In 38 IPL matches so far in the MCA Stadium Pune, the team batting second has won 20 of those games. Thus, there isn’t much to choose from but being a new surface they would ideally look to bat second.

Average 1st innings score – 159 (38 matches)

Win% while chasing – 52.6%

Batter to watch out forNicholas Pooran

After a horrendous 2021 IPL campaign for Nicholas Pooran, a lot of eyebrows were raised when the SunRisers Hyderabad paid a whopping ₹10.75 crore to attain his services. However, based on recent form, the Caribbean cricketer is enjoying one hell of a purple patch since the turn of the year. He scored a devastating 70 against England in the five-match T20I series, while chipping in with cameos of 20s and 30s in the other games. Moreover, in the recently concluded three-match T20I series against India in India, Pooran scored three consecutive fifties (61, 62, 63) and looked in great touch with improved decision-making — something he was being criticised for over the last two seasons.

Bowler to watch out forPrasidh Krishna

The 26-year-old Bengaluru boy has been in the form of his life ahead of the latest instalment of the Indian Premier League. Krishna was amongst wickets in the domestic circuit before he earned his call-up to India’s ODI squad earlier this year, the 26-year-old played four ODIs against South Africa and the West Indies, where he took 12 wickets, including career-best figures of 4/12 against the Windies, and followed that up with 15 wickets in two First-class matches against Puducherry and Jammu & Kashmir. Thus, given the nature of the pitches in Maharashtra at the start of any tournament, Prasidh Krishna could be lethal for the Rajasthan Royals, especially during the PowerPlay overs.

Fantasy XI

Wicket Keeper – Jos Buttler

Batters – Kane Williamson (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Devdutt Padikkal

All Rounders – Aiden Markram, Washington Sundar

Bowlers – Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal (vc), Trent Boult, Umran Malik

Today’s match prediction:

Had this match been contested somewhere like the Wankhede or Brabourne Stadium, it would have been a very close encounter between two teams with excellent fast bowlers, however, in a pitch where there will more than enough assistance for spinners, the Rajasthan Royals have the batters and spin bowlers to exploit the most out of this wicket. Thus, I expect the RR to start their campaign with a victory, although it won’t be as straightforward as the gap between the two teams looks to be on paper.
