Mayank Agarwal’s Punjab Kings will square off against Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bangalore as both teams will look to start off their respective campaign on a positive note. Let’s look at PBKS vs RCB Match Prediction.

The third match of the 2022 IPL will see familiar foes square off against each other as the Punjab Kings take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the DY Patil Stadium. While the RCB failed to address some key lingering issues from the past, the Punjab Kings, for maybe the first time, have built a squad that can compete against any opposition – at least on paper.
The Punjab Kings have one of the best top-fives in the league based on balance and flexibility and have solved their long-standing problem of premier death bowlers. The addition of Kagiso Rabada and Odean Smith provides some much-needed support to Arshdeep Singh, while an explosive middle order of Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, Raj Bawa and Odean Smith gives them enough firepower at the death. Moreover, pitches at DY Patil have the tendency to be a bit on the sticky side, which will aid the likes of Liam Livingstone and Harpreet Brar during the middle overs and Arshdeep with his change-ups in the death overs.
The RCB, on the other hand, looked for overall squad balance at the auction table and were somewhat successful in that regard, though they failed to fill in certain holes in their playing XI which could land them in a spot of bother. They forked out ₹7 crore for the CSK stalwart Faf du Plessis, but it’ll be a different ball-game altogether for the former South Africa skipper since he won’t be having the same cushion and depth below him like he was used to with the Chennai Super Kings. Virat Kohli, too, hasn’t been in the best of forms, while both Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror occupying key slots in the playing XI without contest is another concern. All in all, expect a very tightly contested match between the two, and the one who breaks sweat first will eventually end up losing the match.

The pitch here at the DY Patil Stadium is expected to be a double-paced yet bouncy wicket, making aggressive stroke play and on the rise shots that much more difficult to execute. There will be swing and bounce on offer for the quicks, while the spinners will also get into the game if they can adapt their bowling in accordance with the pitch. Scores around 160-170 looks par here, however, if 2-3 wickets fall during the PowerPlay overs or the openers can sensibly negate the swing and bide their time, teams could end up with scores as low as 130-140 or as high as 200+.

Batter to watch out for – Mayank Agarwal
The newly appointed Punjab Kings skipper has been one of the most consistent performers over the years. In the last two seasons, he has scored 865 runs at a strike rate of 147.86, which is best among all top ten run scorers in this period. Although his stats against the RCB doesn’t bode too well with just 259 runs in 10 IPL innings, Mayank is a big-match player and with the added responsibility of captaincy, the former RCB boy will be expected to excel in his new role.
Bowler to watch out for – Harshal Patel
Harshal is someone who can be a lethal component for RCB especially during the middle-overs and the death overs. Just like yesterday’s Wankhede pitch, there will be pace and bounce in the DY Patil Stadium, however, I also expect it to be a double-paced/spongy wicket that’ll greatly assist bowlers with change-up deliveries and medium to slower bowlers in particular. Harshal took 32 wickets from 15 matches last season bowling in tracks with similar characteristics–albeit across two legs and two countries. Moreover, in recent months as well, although Patel has been on the expensive side, he has delivered with consistent wickets for India, taking 11 wickets in 8 limited-overs matches for India since IPL 2021.
Wicketkeeper – A Rawat

Today’s match prediction
Although both teams look evenly matched on paper, both teams are coming into this fixture with key players missing. RCB have a weakened batting line-up, while the PBKS bowling looks toothless on paper without Kagiso Rabada. Thus if I have to tip my hat towards one team, I’d back PBKS to come out of this fixture with a victory, but by the skin of their teeth.
