Joel Hans Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He played college basketball for one year with the Kansas Jayhawks. In 2014, he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. However, he couldn’t make his NBA debut until the 26th of October 2016 because of his multiple foot and knee injuries. 

After missing his first two seasons due to injury, Embiid then played his first season in the 2016-17 season and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team despite playing only 31 games.

Ever since his debut, he has been a strong centre player with incredible offensive skills, averaging 20+ PPG every season. His best season to date has been the 2021-22 season, in which he averaged 30.6 PPG despite missing 21 games and losing the race for MVP against Nikola Joki?. 

In the 328 games Embiid has played so far, he has averaged 26 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Embiid is now playing in his prime and has already achieved several recognitions, which include:

According to reports, Joel Embiid’s net worth is estimated to be around US$35 million. He was quoted as the 60th-highest-paid athlete in 2021. 

Embiid signed a five-year contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2017, which was reportedly worth US$178 million and earns him US$32 million every year, making him the third highest-paid centre in the league. His next extension deal is said to go up to US$196 million over four years. He is said to be earning US$6 million from his endorsement deals.

Ever since his debut year, Embiid has been in contact with several brands. His major brands include Amazon, Mountain Dew and Electronic Arts (EA). His latest deals include one with Under Armour.

Under Armour

The seven-foot centre signed a five-year footwear deal with Under Armour in 2018, which is said to earn him more than a million US dollars per year. 

In 2020, Under Armour, with Embiid, released his signature shoe called “Embiid 1” with a US$120 initial price tag. After ending his deal with Adidas as its brand ambassador, Embiid signed with Under Armour when Adidas decided not to exercise its standard “match clause” and gave a green light to the NBA star to go ahead with the deal.

Crypto.com

Embiid is featured in a commercial for Crypto.com, which is titled ‘Bravery is a process’. The commercial’s message was inspired by the story of staying true to your unique path. Embiid didn’t play basketball until the age of 15. He moved to the US at the age of 16 and committed his development to be a basketball player, to which, Kris Marszalek, Co-Founder and CEO of Crypto.com, stated:

Kingston

HyperX, the gaming brand of Kingston, announced in February 2018 that it had partnered with Embiid, an avid gamer, to make him one of the company’s brand ambassadors. Embiid has a keen interest in gaming, about which he also talks about on his Twitter and other social media handles. 

Mountain Dew

Embiid partnered with Mountain Dew in 2018 on the ‘Kickstart Rising Stars” project. The roster for this project also included Ben Simmons, Jamal Murray, Kyle Kuzma and Jaylen Brown. 

Embiid and Mountain Dew released a limited-edition hot sauce on October 30, 2020. The company only made 500 bottles of this edition, and the only way to get your hands on it was by participating in a social media contest. 

Embiid and Mountain Dew also collaborated with Under Armour to release a custom-made basketball shoe: UA Hovr Havoc ‘The Process’. 

Electronic Arts (EA)

Embiid was selected as the cover athlete for NBA LIVE 19. The game was released on September 7th of 2018, and Embiid was seen on the cover of NBA LIVE 19 – The One Edition

Hulu

During the NBA All-Star weekend in February 2019, Embiid signed an endorsement deal with the video streaming service. Joel Embiid posted on his Instagram that whenever he’d say “Hulu has live sports”, the company would pay him. Hulu also released campaigns on national TV, which included Joel Embiid and other NBA stars like Damian Lillard. 

Fanatics

Fanatics partnered with the 76ers star to release his merchandise as an NBA player. The deal pays him millions of dollars just for giving Fanatics the rights to sell the merchandise. 

Joel Embiid’s Past endorsements 

Adidas

Embiid signed with Adidas during his early injury-prone seasons, 2014–18. His shoe deal included him wearing various budget models like the Adidas Mad Bounce and the Adidas Light Em Up 2. 

Adidas also released a custom-made shoe for Embiid called Adidas Pro Bounce PE, which had his face animated on the bottom. 

Amazon

Amazon partnered with Embiid and the 76ers to release a few books on him, which include: Joel Embiid: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball’s Star Centers by Clayton Geoffreys, The Process by Derek Bodner, and Joel Embiid: How Joel Embiid Became The Most Dominant Big Man In the NBA (The NBA’s Most Explosive Players) by Jackson Carter.
