2025 FIFA Club World Cup | Group F: Mamelodi Sundowns vs Fluminense | Preview and Prediction

Fluminense have a golden chance of joining their fellow Brazilian sides Palmeiras, Botafogo, and Flamengo in the Round of 16 as they take on South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in this thrilling Group F clash in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Here is our Preview and Prediction for the game.

2025 FIFA Club World Cup | Group F: Mamelodi Sundowns vs Fluminense | 00:30 AM IST, 26th June

Mamelodi Sundowns have given a brilliant account of themselves in this tournament with their fast-paced and open attacking style of play that they call “Shoeshine and Paint”. It was on full display in their opening game against Ulsan where they opened up the Korean side at will at every opportunity that presented itself whenever they were in possession of the ball. It was rather unfortunate that they ended up with just a 1-0 result when it could have been much more emphatic.

In their second game against Dortmund, however, their playstyle came to haunt them as they insisted to play the same way despite Dortmund’s suffocating press and they paid the price for their stubbornness as goalkeeper Ronwen Williams gifted the ball away for the Dortmund equaliser. 1-1 soon turned into 4-1 and just like that promise almost turned to despair. However, their attacking prowess was visible in spades as they scored 2 more and would have almost levelled the game had they had a few more minutes.

In a tournament that has seen African teams not really give a promising account of themselves, the onus falls on Mamelodi Sundown to keep the African flag flying high in the competition, and victory against Fluminense could just be the perfect way to do that.

Fluminense enter this particular game with a tremendous burden and weight of expectations upon them. Brazilian sides have been having an excellent Club World Cup so far, with Botafogo, Flamengo, and Palmeiras already sealing their passage to the Round of 16 of the competition. This puts further pressure on the Tricolor to get a result and continue the superlative run of results for Brazilian sides.

Thankfully, they have enough experience and the position in the table to make a run for it. A deserving draw against Dortmund followed by a convincing yet nervy 4-2 victory over Ulsan puts them in a very advantageous position to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Both teams enter this game with a whole lot to play for. There is quality, skill, and difference makers on both teams and this fixture will be a test of which team will make the lesser mistakes and seize the moment that will be the difference between both sides.

We expect Fluminense to be narrow victors in the contest, but not discounting the threat that the Sundowns possess.

Score Prediction: Mamelodi Sundowns 1- 2 Fluminense

Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida.
