Five English Football League Clubs with Food and Drink Sponsors

If you’ve ever been inside the ground of an EFL club, then chances are you will have seen Pukka Pies on the advertising hoardings. Having a half-time pint and snack during a football match is a huge part of the overall experience.

Some football teams have taken this one step further, though. In 2020-21, five EFL clubs have official sponsors that are types of food and drink, so Let’s take a look.

Crewe Alexandra

Mid-table League One outfit the Alex is sponsored by Mornflake. We know what you’re thinking. It sounds like a Cornflakes knock-off brand, but they actually specialise in oat-based breakfast cereals and are well-known in both Crewe and Cheshire.

Mornflake celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2021, but the family of managing director John Lea have milled oats in the area for almost 350 years. By extension, and being a subsidiary of Morning Foods, this is one of the oldest companies in Britain partnering their local team.

Grimsby Town

If there’s one thing that people associate with the Lincolnshire port town of Great Grimsby, then it’s fish. Their football team, the Mighty Mariners who aren’t living up to the name in their struggle to avoid relegation out of League Two, has Young’s Seafood as long-time sponsors.

Almost 40% of all the fish eaten in Britain is supplied by this firm. Young’s is part of the proud maritime tradition in Grimsby, so here’s hoping the club doesn’t sink into the National League. Just don’t remind Mariners fans that Blundell Park has a Cleethorpes address!

Millwall

Millwall supporters have a well-earned reputation for making The Den into one of the most hostile atmospheres in English league football, but the Lions don’t seem quite so fearsome when you consider a Swedish chocolate drinks firm is emblazoned on their shirts. Huski Chocolate signed a five-year sponsorship deal with them ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Specialising in chocolate flavoured protein drinks, this shows a softer side to the Lions who could yet make a late roar into the Championship play-offs. Picture, if you will, Millwall boss Gary Rowett sipping his Huski hot chocolate before bedtime.

The Lions, one way or another can have a huge say on who makes the top six with their remaining fixture list. According to the latest online football betting, Millwall are 80/1 outsiders to sneak into the play-off places themselves.

Plymouth Argyle

Happy to do their bit to improve relations with neighbouring county Cornwall, Devon club Plymouth Argyle have been sponsored by Ginsters pasty company for some years now. The Pirates will tell you that their principal partners offer plenty more products than that.

Ginsters also has a range of sausage rolls, sandwiches and even pasta bowls. Savoury snacks are part and parcel of living in the West Country where Argyle look safe in League One for another season.

Stevenage

We’ve saved the best until last – Burger King sponsors Stevenage, and before you ask, no it’s not a misprint. You might prefer McDonald’s or a KFC, but you’ve got to admit it’s arguably the most random of partnerships with a lower league English football team ever.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Burger King are a fast-food restaurant specialising in burgers. Stevenage have gone on a fabulous recent run in League Two that has completely taken them away from relegation danger. The assist for that goes to the Flame-Grilled Whopper!
