The stage is set for arguably the biggest gladiatorial match in this World Cup, as Erling Haaland and Harry Kane, arguably two of the best strikers of this generation, cross paths hoping to take their team to the semi-finals.

Norway look to make another massive leap in what has been a World Cup campaign for the ages against an England team who are as united as they have ever been over the last few years, in what is building up to be a fascinating quarter-final clash.

Norway have been breaking new ground in their first men’s World Cup appearance in 28 years. Led by the effervescent Haaland, they have been a breath of fresh air: full of vibes, joy, and breathtaking performances.

Against Brazil, Haaland was a bystander for almost the entirety of the game, not getting enough touches on the ball and not really doing much to give the Brazilian backline much of a headache. But that is the undeniable beauty and threat of this mountain of a striker. All he needed were two moments, and in those moments he exploded like a volcano, leaving Brazil shattered in his wake and out of the World Cup in a trice.

There is also a beautiful bit of nostalgia about this Norwegian squad. In 1994, Alf-Inge Haaland, Gøran Sørloth, and Erik Thorstvedt represented Norway at the World Cup. Fast forward to 2026, and their sons, Erling, Alexander, and Kristian, respectively, are making both them and their country proud on the biggest stage of them all.

There was huge concern ahead of their quarter-final, as head coach Ståle Solbakken addressed concerns about a sickness bug having affected a large chunk of his squad, but those concerns have been quickly dispelled by the team doctor, who has since stated that the entire squad is fit and available for selection.

As for England, their confidence has skyrocketed after they not only ended Mexico’s impeccable record at the Azteca as well as this World Cup, but also managed to bury some ghosts of their own past with a thrilling 3–2 win over the hosts, which not only brought out England’s best but also showcased coach Thomas Tuchel’s tactical intelligence.

England continue to face issues at right-back, with Jarell Quansah receiving a two-game ban for his red card and missing the quarter-finals as well as the semi-finals — provided they qualify. However, there are other concerns, as Mark Guéhi and Declan Rice both missed training, with the former feeling tightness in his hamstring and the latter complaining of illness.

There are a couple of further suspension concerns that England will need to be careful of. Rice, Jude Bellingham, Guéhi, and Nico O’Reilly are all walking a disciplinary tightrope after receiving yellow cards in the knockout stage. Another yellow could see any of them miss the semi-final.

Harry Kane will continue to be England’s hero, but given it’s Haaland on the other end, it will be the defenders that have to step up more than ever and have the game of their lives if they want to reach the World Cup semi-finals for a second time in three editions.

This is bound to be a battle of the attacking two-steps, with Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard going up against Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. But it’s the defenders on both ends who will have the most pressure. Julian Ryerson, Kristoffer Ajer, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa — all of them face arguably their toughest test of this World Cup; whoever passes it will be the reason for their side’s victory and passage to the semi-finals.

When all’s said and done, we believe that England are slight favourites to win this tie, though it is going to be one almighty tussle between two of the last remnants of a dying breed of strikers.
