FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group B Preview

The Countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has now come down to less than 10 days, and all teams have either announced or are in process of announcing their sides while applying final touches in their preparation for the tournament.

We continue with our detailed coverage of all groups, as in this article, we cover Group B of the World Cup (click here to read the preview for Group A), how they stack up, their pathways and their qualification probabilities.

FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group B Teams

  • Canada (CONCACAF)
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina (UEFA)
  • Qatar (AFC)
  • Switzerland (UEFA)

The run-in

Canada

Canada are the co-hosts of the tournament along with USA and Mexico, so they did not need to be part of the qualification process by virtue of being the hosts. This will be Canada’s third appearance in the FIFA World Cup, having played in the 1986 and the 2022 editions respectively.

Les Rouges have had a mixed run of form in the build-up to the World Cup. In the last 10 matches that they have played, they have managed to win only 4 of them, but if we dig deeper, there is a trend of defensive solidity in the side, keeping clean sheets in 7 of them that include creditable draws against fellow World Cup qualifying nations in Colombia and Ecuador.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia will grace the World Cup after a 12-year absence, marking what will be only their second appearance in the World Cup as an independent nation.

The Dragons had a rather dramatic path to make the World Cup finals. After finishing outside the qualification spots in their qualifying rounds, they had to navigate what was a difficult and formidable playoff path ahead of them. They first had to get the better of Wales, which they did in a tense penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. They then had to face off against 4-time champions Italy, and were staring down the barrel at 1-0 down before another late equalizer took it penalties, and once again the Bosnians prevailed with a 4-1 scoreline to spark jubilant celebrations among the fans and players alike.

Qatar

Qatar will also be playing in their second World Cup following their debut in 2022 and will be looking to improve on their showing from the past tournament.

Qatar qualified on the back of an impressive and lengthy qualifying campaign that saw them play 4 rounds before accumulating the required points and wins to rubber-stamp their qualification for the World Cup Finals.

Switzerland

Switzerland has been one of the most consistent European sides in terms of qualifying for the World Cup. The 2026 edition will be the 13th that they will be playing in and their sixth consecutive one. However, despite such a rich pedigree in the tournament, they have not been able to get past the quarterfinals, and even that was 72 years ago.

The Swiss enjoyed a relatively hassle-free qualification campaign, finishing unbeaten and on top spot to seal their spot in this year’s world cup.

How each team stacks up

Canada will be looking to bank on their defensive prowess and stability, along with the star quality that will be provided by Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies from the left, Jonathan David of Juventus up top, and the likes of Ismael Kone and Tajon Buchanan in what should be a good mix of players led by Jesse Marsch. Les Rouges will hope that this is the World Cup that they finally register their first-ever win in the tournament and hopefully get past the group stages as well.

Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarej has built the identity of his side around rugged and old-school defensive intensity. They might not play attractive or beautiful football, but they have enough to make a nuisance out of themselves against the fancier names in the competition. Edin Dzeko will be leading the line for his side at the young age of 40, while young sensations Tarik Muharemovic and Karim Alajbegovic give a glimpse to the future for the Dragons.

Qatar will be reliant on their veteran trio of Akram Afif, Almoez Ali, and Hassan Al-Haydos to guide their team to get their first victory in the World Cup proper and hopefully go to the latter stages of the competition.

Switzerland have a wealth of experience in their ranks. Led by Granit Xhaka and ably supported by the likes of Remo Freuler, Breel Embolo, Ricardo Rodriguez, Manuel Akanji, and Gregor Kobel. The amount of experience in that side along with the quality that each of those players possess, they will definitely start as favourites to make it out of the Group stages.

Who makes it out of Group B?

Switzerland are an absolute lock to finish this group as the toppers. They have way too much quality, big-match experience and the wherewithal to see out the opponents in their group with a great balance of flair and composure.

The second place should be a spot that will be closely contested by the remainder of the three sides. Bosnia, Canada, and Qatar all have varied and different qualities that set them apart on their day, making all of them dangerous opponents, but Canada will be backed by what will be a vociferous home crowd and that should be enough to propel them to 2nd spot in the group. Bosnia has a chance to probably qualify as one of the 8 3rd placed teams, while Qatar will finish the standings at the bottom.

Prediction

Switzerland (1st)
Canada (2nd)
Bosnia & Herzegovina (3rd)
Qatar (4th)
