BBL 2025/26 | Match 1: Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Sixers | Preview and Predictions

Five-time men’s Big Bash League champions Perth Scorchers will kick off their BBL|15 campaign on December 14 against three-time champions Sydney Sixers at Optus Stadium in Perth, aiming to bounce back from last season’s hot-and-cold campaign, where they missed the play-offs.

The Sixers finished second in the league stage last season but fell short of reaching the final after losing to the Sydney Thunder in the Challenger.

Here, we present our preview and predictions for the season-opener between the Scorchers and the Sixers.

As the new season begins, the Scorchers seek stability after an inconsistent run last year, which exposed gaps throughout their squad. Experience and legacy remain their strengths, yet replacing outgoing star players will test their depth as they eye their sixth title.

With the bat, the likes of Mitchell Marsh, Finn Allen, and Sam Hanning will provide explosive power at the top for the Scorchers, who will look to improve significantly on their poor Powerplay showing last season. The return of Laurie Evans in the middle order will also be a major boost for them.

When it comes to bowling, despite the departures of Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye, the Scorchers boast an elite all-round pace attack. Jhye Richardson is arguably one of the best new-ball bowlers in the BBL, with English left-arm swing bowler David Payne also coming in as a like-for-like Behrendorff replacement.

In terms of shortcomings, the lack of wicket-taking options in their spin department, as well as their inconsistency away from home, has badly hampered the Scorchers’ chances in recent seasons. Their spin unit produced only 14 wickets at an average of 31 last season, showing limited penetration. Moreover, only three wins away from home over the last two seasons is not acceptable for a team looking for a sixth BBL title.

On the other hand, chasing a fourth title, the Sydney Sixers must overcome venue-to-venue inconsistency and strengthen their execution in key phases of the game. Experience, depth, and tactical clarity remain their defining assets, but increased competition means consistency and adaptability will determine how they fare this time around.

A deep roster of pace-bowling all-rounders gives the Sixers a clear structural edge coming into this season. Their squad is built around multi-dimensional players like Hayden Kerr, Jack Edwards, and Sam Curran, who contribute with impactful overs and valuable lower-order runs.

However, Powerplay batting remains the Sixers’ biggest concern. Last season, their top order struggled to generate momentum early, collectively averaging 28.87 with a strike rate of just 120.28. Although they’ve strengthened their top order with the marquee signing of Babar Azam, this year the veteran Pakistani batter has averaged only 11 with a strike rate of 106.1 during Powerplays in T20s. Additionally, the unavailability of Steven Smith, who had a strike rate of 163.89 in the Powerplay last season, for most of the campaign due to The Ashes, will be another significant miss for the Sixers. 

In terms of bowling, the Sixers’ spin department lacks both experience and proven consistency, leaving them with a noticeable weakness during the middle overs. Both Todd Murphy and Jafer Chohan have proven to be inefficient and inexperienced at this level so far. 

Looking ahead to this fixture, despite recent struggles in away venues, the Scorchers have been impeccable at home all through these years. Their explosive batting line-up and a bowling attack that suits the Optus surface will prove difficult to handle for the Sixers, especially with Sam Curran arriving only during the latter half of the tournament. The Sixers’ thin spin attack and reliance on seamers, including Sean Abbott, who leaked 11 an over last season, remain a concern.
