Upsets and defending champions on the rope

Another action packed day has come to an end at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with defending champions England in the hot seat while New Zealand faced the wrath of the Afghanistanis.

Here’s a quick recap of Day 7’s games. 

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh

The day kicked off with the two Asian teams battling it out and Sri Lanka started strong but Mustafizur and Rishad Hossain put the breaks on Lanka and a collapse saw them manage on 124 in the 20 overs. Sri Lanka got Bangladesh on the ropes early on but a crucial partnership between Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy saw them almost close out the game before Mahmudullah’s experienced shoulders saw Bangladesh through a tricky chase.

Afghanistan vs New Zealand

Afghanistan started their game against the Kiwis with a big 100-run partnership as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran set the perfect platform for the Asian team. Afghanistan choked a bit at the end which saw New Zealand restrict them to 159/6. The Kiwis though were never in the game with the bat as it was Fazallaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan causing havoc once again, bundling out New Zealand for 75 to pick up a massive 84 run win.

South Africa vs Netherlands

Apart from Sybrand Engelbrecht’s 40, the Dutch never got going as Marco Jansen, Ottneil Baartman and Anrich Nortje restricted Netherlands to 103. The Proteas had a horror start as well, going 3-3 in the third over itself which ignited some hope amongst the Dutch but an aggressive Tristan Stubbs with the ever reliable David Miller killed the game, with Miller stepping up in the final few overs to guide South Africa home to a 4-wicket win.

South Africa – 106/6 (18.5 overs)

Australia vs England

The final game of the day was the blockbuster clash between England and Australia with Australia put into bat first. Handy contributions from the five including a 17-ball 30 from Marcus Stoinis saw the Australians post 201/7 in their 20 overs. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler gave England a strong start but Adam Zampa put the breaks on the Englishmen and regular wickets from Pat Cummins and Stoinis saw the Australians restrict England to 165/6 in their 20 overs.
