In Match 30 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, high-flying co-hosts Sri Lanka take on the stumbling Australians, who are depleted through injury and come into this game on the back of a shocking defeat to Zimbabwe.
With the race for the Super Eight stage getting tighter, this is a crucial encounter for both teams to cement their place at the top of the group.
Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.
After their shock loss to Zimbabwe, Australia are in a spot of bother and need to dig deep to find their way to the Super Eight stage.
Australia’s biggest issue in their opening games has been their batting. Their top order, comprising explosive operators in Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Tim David, have all failed two games in a row, and with their captain Mitchell Marsh sitting on the bench with an injury, their experienced batters need to step up. Middle-order batters Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Matt Renshaw have tried to bail the team out, and while that worked against Ireland, they couldn’t get the job done against Zimbabwe.
At Pallekele, where the ball will be turning, the Australian big hitters need to find a way to combat the spin and put up a good score on the board. If their form wasn’t already a headache, they’re also sweating it out over the fitness of their captain Mitchell Marsh, who has missed the first two games through a groin injury. Australia have even flown in former captain Steve Smith as a potential back-up for Marsh, should he be unable to recover in time.
Australia’s bowling has been carried by their spinners, with Adam Zampa leading the line and supported ably by Matthew Kuhnemann and Glenn Maxwell. The likes of Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Ellis have been handy on the slower wickets, but fast bowlers Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett have been leaking runs, something the Australians will look to fix.
Injuries seem to be Australia’s biggest enemy, though. While captain Marsh has missed out on both games thus far, veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of the World Cup just days before the start of the tournament to join Pat Cummins on the sidelines. With no announcement made for Hazlewood’s replacement, things went from bad to worse against Zimbabwe as Marcus Stoinis also pulled up while bowling and wasn’t able to complete his over, though he did return to bat.
In the other camp, Sri Lanka are on a strong run of form, having picked up wins in both their games. Here, they’ll be looking to make it three out of three and reach the Super Eight.
The co-hosts have been clinical with the bat, with their top- and middle-order batters all getting runs under their belts. Even with Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of the World Cup, the Lankan spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage has been economical and key for the 2014 T20 World Cup winners.
Having slowly ticked off all the boxes, the Lankans are beginning to look like strong contenders for the title.
The Pallekele ground offers a slow wicket, which will provide a lot of runs and assistance to spinners.
Given the form of both teams as well as the recent struggles of the Australian team, Sri Lanka start as our favourites to pick up a win in this encounter.
