England start their 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with an encounter against Bangladesh, who have already notched up a win against Scotland in their opening game.
Ahead of the game, here are our preview and predictions.
England were the inaugural champions when the tournament started in 2009. Since then, however, they have failed to win every other edition of the T20I World Cup.
Coming into this tournament, the Lionesses boast one of the best line-ups in women’s cricket, featuring the likes of Heather Knight, Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, and Nat Sciver-Brunt. They’ve had a mixed bag of performances in their preparations, losing badly to rivals Australia before comprehensively beating South Africa. Ultimately, they are a well-balanced side and remain one of the favourites to go all the way.
One the other hand, coming into this tournament, Bangladesh wanted to dismiss their abysmal Women’s T20I World Cup record of not having won a game since beating Ireland in 2014, so it must have been a huge relief when they beat Scotland in their opening encounter.
Even though it was a low score of 119, the Bangla bowlers did a fantastic job to secure the game in comfortable fashion. Sobhana Mostary, meanwhile, was their top-scorer with 36 runs as Ritu Moni took two wickets.
England are certainly the favourites here with their far superior line-up and ranking compared to that of Bangladesh, and it would be a mighty upset if the latter were to pull off a win against a side they have never beaten. The pitch at Sharjah is mostly dry in nature and assists the pace bowlers more, though the spinners may come into play later on as well.
