Suryakumar Yadav’s team India bounced back in style to tie up the series at 1-1 in Hobart and the five-match T20I series now moves to the deciding fourth game. With the first game having been washed out, it will be the fourth game that will decide the outcome of the series and a hamstrung Australia, who have multiple stars headed off for Ashes preparation will look to seal the home series.
For this game, here we present our preview and predictions.
Team India come into this game with a lot of confidence after a strong win in Hobart. Chasing a steep 187, Washington Sundar led the chase with a calm and collected 49* and was ably supported by Jitesh Sharma as well, who was playing his first game of the series. All of the batters chipped in with scores but the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma will know that once set in, they need to shoulder more responsibility to see the game through. India’s biggest batting issue this series has been the top order with the openers or Suryakumar Yadav unable to give the team a strong platform at the top.
India dropped the struggling Sanju Samson for Jitesh Sharma and Sharma impressed immediately. By bringing in Washington Sundar for Kuldeep Yadav, India extended their batting lineup and it gave more freedom to the likes of Sharma to free their arms. By bringing Arshdeep Singh into the team, India gave themselves an experienced seamer to partner Jasprit Bumrah and Singh struck immediately in the power play and it was his double strike in the opening three overs that set Australia back. Singh bolstering the bowling attack will be key, especially heading to Carrara, where the bowlers will come into play.
The hosts meanwhile already saw Josh Hazlewood leave after the second T20I and their explosive opener Travis Head has also left the Australian camp as he, like Hazlewood, heads to prepare for the upcoming Ashes series. Glenn Maxwell’s addition will give the hosts some confidence but Australia are a little short on experience, in both the batting and bowling departments. Mitchell Marsh, who has had a quiet series so far, will need to step up while the explosive duo of Tim David and Marcus Stoinis, who dug Australia out of a hole in the previous match, will need to continue taking up more responsibility.
It’s been three years since the last T20I in Carrara and a fresh strip will offer something for the bowlers and while last time around on a bowler-friendly strip in Melbourne, India struggled, Australia’s lack of experienced stars will hurt them and we have Suryakumar Yadav and co. as favourites to take the lead in the T20I series.
Fantasy XI: Abhishek Sharma (c), Mitchell Marsh (vc), Shubman Gill, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Washington Sundar, Mitchell Owen, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Nathan Ellis
Venue: Carrara Oval, Carrara
