IPL 2026 | Match 33: MI vs CSK | Preview and Predictions

The biggest clash of the IPL is upon us, as the tournament’s two most successful sides collide.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) will lock horns with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 33 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season in what is a hugely important clash for both sides to gain ground in the race for the play-offs.

Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 33: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings | 19:30 IST, April 23, 2026

Well, it seems like we might watch the same movie again as far as the Mumbai Indians are concerned. Start slowly, teeter on the verge of a full-blown crisis, and then, out of nowhere, produce a result and a performance so seismic that it puts the entire league on notice.

MI’s thumping 99-run win over the Gujarat Titans has once again incited a similar response. Tilak Varma shook off his cobwebs in the most scintillating fashion. Jasprit Bumrah managed to break his wicketless streak. The introduction of Ashwani Kumar has once again yielded a 4-fer, and, for once, MI looked proactive rather than reactive in a situation that demanded they play that way.

The relief and joy in the eyes of skipper Hardik Pandya showed how badly he and his side needed that victory. If they manage to replicate the same intensity and drive against CSK, it will definitely put them on a positive trajectory.

MI have been granted a double boost in terms of personnel. Rohit Sharma has been declared fit, and ace all-rounder Will Jacks has linked up with the squad after missing the first six matches of the season. Jacks’ arrival will pose a happy headache to the MI top brass given his skills as both a batter and a handy spin-bowler. Given he was England’s best player at the recent T20 World Cup, it would be no surprise to see him drafted straight back into the starting XI.

As for the Chennai Super Kings, their two-game winning streak was halted by SunRisers Hyderabad in a game that they should have won. However, the bigger blow for them comes in the form of an injury, with teenage star Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring tear that he suffered against SRH.

Last time out, CSK had the win in their sights for the vast majority of the game, only to falter when it mattered the most. This defeat also continues the worrying trend of the Super Kings’ inability to chase down totals above 190, which is another area that they have not been able to find answers to. With 84 runs needed in ten overs, the way CSK capitulated to fall two hits short will definitely raise a few concerns.

How CSK manage to replace the aggression, class, and quality of Mhatre could very well shape up the remainder of their campaign, given that the 18-year-old had become the linchpin of their intent up the order with his fast starts.

We believe that the Mumbai Indians are firm favourites to win this contest. With the Chennai Super Kings’ Achilles heel being their inability to chase down 190+ totals, batting first and putting up a score in that ballpark range will definitely put MI in a strong position to add another two points in the bag.

Fantasy XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma (c), Naman Dhir, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Mitchell Santner, Jasprit Bumrah, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Winners Prediction: Mumbai Indians
