Côte d’Ivoire vs Ecuador | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction

This is a Group E encounter between African heavyweights Ivory Coast and South American force Ecuador on the 15th June at the Philadelphia Stadium.

Ivory Coast qualified for this year’s World Cup after a 12-year hiatus from the tournament. The Ivorians qualified top of their group in the CAF qualifiers but have been drawn with Germany, Ecuador and Curacão in a relatively tough Group E. 

Ecuador also qualified for this year’s World Cup performing well and ending up as runners-up in a competitive CONMEBOL round-robin qualifiers. Although they started the campaign with a three-point deduction, the Ecuadorians recovered from the setback in spectacular fashion and qualified with two games to spare. 

From an injury perspective, Ecuador had to leave out Leonardo Campana and Patrik Mercado due to long-term injuries while Moisés Caicedo and Enner Valencia are returning from injury concerns and need to be handled carefully. Ivory Coast had to leave out key defender Clement Akpa due to an adductor injury. The Elephants will also watch with concern Evan Ndicka, Frank Kessié and Sébastien Haller as they are returning from fitness concerns. 

Looking at the match-up, this is the first time these two will be facing each other. This will be a contest between a resolute Ecuadorian defence and an attacking Ivorian unit. Ecuador has been unbeaten in their last 19 games and their defence conceded only five goals in 18 matches and notable wins against Argentina and Columbia make them a formidable opponent. Their issue is creating chances and scoring goals while the Ivorians have some incredible young attacking forwards in Amad Diallo, Yan Diomande, Simon Adingra and Bouzamana Traoré along with the experienced Haller. 

Difficult to call this game as both teams have incredible talents all over the pitch but we believe this could end in a narrow win for the Ecuadorians due to their defensive solidity which the Ivorians might find challenging to breach.
