Jordan vs Algeria | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Predictions

World Cup debutants Jordan will face African opponents Algeria in their second group stage game on 23rd June at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

Both Jordan and Algeria lost their opening games to Austria and Argentina respectively. While Algeria came up against a phenomenon named Lionel Messi, Austria battled hard to secure a victory against an impressive Jordan side. 

Jordan vs Austria wasn’t a particularly one-sided game as Austria needed individual brilliance to breach the Jordanian defence in the first half. Jordan found an equaliser early in the second half but their inexperience at the big stage showed thereafter as they lost focus and let the Austrians take control of the game. Austria ended up winning the game with the help of a slice of luck with an own goal from Jordan and a stoppage-time penalty from Marko Arnautovi?. Jordan fought valiantly but ended up losing with the Austrians grabbing three massive points. 

Algeria lost to the defending champions courtesy of Messi magic. Lionel Messi scored  his maiden World Cup hattrick and became joint-top scorer at the World Cup alongside Miroslav Klose. However, the match had a decisive moment that could have changed the outcome of the game. Messi was lucky not to have been sent-off for a foul on Algerian defender Aissa Mandi. Algeria felt they were treated unfairly as they were only 1-0 down when this incident happened and had Messi been sent-off, they could have secured a positive result. However, it was not to be and Argentina controlled the game well with Messi scoring two more goals and putting the result beyond doubt. 

This is a must-win fixture for either side if they want to have a chance to qualify. Algeria has a relatively stronger side to newcomers Jordan. The former African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners also have the experience of playing under pressure in big games. Algeria’s form has also been great coming into the World Cup as they were unbeaten in the last four games before the defeat to Argentina. In contrast, Jordan has lost their last three games and are winless in their last five. Jordan rely on defending deep and hitting the opposition on transition while Algeria will try to attack from the wide areas and will rely on quick incisive passing. We believe Algeria have the edge in this fixture and should secure their first three points of their World Cup campaign.
