World Cup debutants Jordan will face African heavyweights Algeria in their second Group J game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 23 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
Both Jordan and Algeria lost their respective opening games to Austria and Argentina. While Algeria came up against a certain phenomenon named Lionel Messi, Austria battled hard to secure a victory against an impressive Jordan side.
The Jordan–Austria game wasn’t a particularly one-sided affair, as Austria needed individual brilliance to breach the Jordanian defence in the first half. The Chivalrous Ones found an equaliser early in the second half, but their inexperience on the big stage showed thereafter as they lost focus and let the Austrians take control of the game.
Austria ended up winning the game with the help of a slice of luck: an own goal from Jordan and a stoppage-time penalty from Marko Arnautovic.
Algeria, meanwhile, lost to the defending champions courtesy of Messi magic. Lionel Messi scored his maiden World Cup hat-trick and became joint top scorer in men’s World Cup history alongside Miroslav Klose.
However, the match had a decisive moment that could have changed the outcome of the game. Messi was lucky not to have been sent off for a foul on Algerian defender Aïssa Mandi. Algeria felt they were treated unfairly as they were only 1–0 down at the time; had Messi been sent off, they might have secured a positive result. However, it was not to be, and Argentina controlled the game well, with Messi scoring two more goals to put the result beyond doubt.
This is a must-win fixture for either side if they want to have a chance to qualify for the knockout stage. Algeria have a relatively stronger side on paper compared to newcomers Jordan. The 2019 AFCON champions also have the experience of playing under pressure in big games, while their form had also been great coming into the World Cup, as they were unbeaten in the last four games before the defeat to Argentina.
In contrast, Jordan have lost their last three games and are winless in their last five. They also rely on defending deep and hitting the opposition on the transition, while Algeria will try to attack from the wide areas and rely on quick, incisive passing.
We believe Algeria have the edge in this fixture and should secure their first three points of this World Cup campaign.
Score Prediction: Jordan 1–2 Algeria
