José Mourinho: How much are the endorsements of the “Special One” worth?

AS Roma manager José Mourinho is currently on a mission to bring the Scudetto back to the Italian capital. The Portuguese took charge of Roma last year, and within his first full season brought the club a major trophy by winning the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. It was enough to bring back the winning mentality and culture to Roma and further prove that Mourinho remains one of the top head coaches in European football.

The “Special One” still commands big wages

Mourinho’s net worth in 2022 is said to have risen once again, with the Portuguese now earning €10.2 million a year pre-tax at AS Roma. It is believed that he was earning a massive £15 million per year pre-tax at his previous club, Tottenham Hotspur. However, the 59-year-old flattered to deceive with the north London club. When he left Spurs in April 2021, it marked the first time since 2002 that he left a job without winning a major trophy.

Nevertheless, Mourinho did get Spurs to the Carabao Cup final in the 2020/21 season, but he was surprisingly sacked a matter of days before the final against Manchester City. Earlier in the campaign, Mourinho voiced his desire to “fight for the Carabao [Cup]” but was battling fixture congestion for much of the opening half of the campaign, as Tottenham toiled in the UEFA Europa League too.

Although Spurs fans will never know if Mourinho would have masterminded a Carabao Cup victory, Tottenham’s loss has most definitely been Roma’s gain to date.

With Mourinho’s stock rising once again after indifferent spells with both Manchester United and Tottenham, how much is the “Special One” worth in 2022 once all his sponsorships and endorsements are combined?

Mourinho’s net worth is said to be well over £100 million. In fact, he’s raked in a total of £97.6 million in wages from his last three managerial roles across Spurs, Manchester United and Chelsea on top of compensation for being relieved of his duties mid-contract at all three clubs.

Mourinho’s sponsorship and endorsement deals are said to earn him an extra £22 million per year. His partnership with Heineken is said to be his biggest deal yet. The Dutch brewery penned a deal with Mourinho back in 2016, with his presence in new Heineken advertisements netting him a cool £4 million per year. Heineken has long been the main sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, and being one of the continent’s most prominent football managers, Mourinho has always seemed like a solid fit for the world’s third-largest beer brand.

Heineken, however, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Mourinho’s other endorsement deals, proving that his “Special One” moniker has certainly stuck from a commercial perspective.

Mourinho also secured a three-year contract with BT Sport in 2014 to work as a brand ambassador for the broadcaster. However, his return for a second spell at Chelsea curtailed this arrangement somewhat. Mourinho also had a long and lucrative relationship with Jaguar Land Rover. Although this was said to have concluded in early 2017, the Portuguese was involved in a media circus later that year when he appeared at the car manufacturer’s Solihull plant watching the professionals manufacture his brand-new F-PACE, which would be the 100,000th of its type to come off the production line.

Mourinho has also been a brand ambassador for sportswear giant Adidas, with the relationship now over 15 years old, earning the Portuguese another £250,000 per year. Such are Adidas’ close ties to Mourinho that the brand opted not to cease his contract after he became manager of Tottenham, who are sponsored by its sportswear rivals Nike. It was the first time that Mourinho had managed a club whose kit wasn’t supplied by Adidas.

All of the above goes to show that Mourinho is anything but washed up from both football and commercial perspectives. Some might say that he’s still dining out on his past glories at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, but his new era with Roma appears to be the perfect tonic for his image back in the Serie A.
