Portugal vs Spain | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Round of 16 | Preview and Prediction

The world stands still as one of football’s undisputed greats goes toe to toe with the one that has been anointed to take the mantle of the best in the years to come.

Cristiano Ronaldo will take on Lamine Yamal as Portugal face Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the world hoping that it lives up to its marquee billing, with the brilliant nature of the recently concluded Mexico–England nail-biter leaving fans wanting more.

For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.

FIFA WC26 | Ro16: POR vs ESP | 00:30 IST, 7 July 2026

For a team as stacked and filled with quality as Portugal are, they have had a wildly inconsistent tournament up until this point due to their fluctuating form. They laboured and were passive against the DR Congo, then bounced back to some semblance of cohesion with a 5–0 win against Uzbekistan, before once again putting up a stodgy performance in their goalless draw against Colombia to set up a date with Croatia in the round of 32.

Against last World Cup’s third-best team, the Seleção das Quinas once again seemed to be just a little off the pace as they fell behind in the second half thanks to an Ivan Perišic goal, before a first World Cup knockout goal for Cristiano Ronaldo and a late, late header from substitute Gonçalo Ramos helped them eventually prevail, though not before a would-be Croatia equaliser was controversially ruled out for offside.

Portugal’s highly rated midfield trio of João Neves, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes has just not got going this World Cup. Fernandes has registered just one assist, while Vitinha and Neves have been put under the scanner for being a little too safe with their passing. Ronaldo himself has not been fully at it, and his substitution against Croatia was a very gutsy move from coach Roberto Martínez, albeit one that ultimately proved to be a success.

For Portugal to go through to the quarter-finals, they cannot afford to keep putting up these inconsistent performances. Staying on top of their game remains paramount, especially facing a team like Spain.

As far as Spain are concerned, defensively they have not put a foot wrong, having conceded no goals thus far, and against Austria in the round of 32 they arguably played their best game of the tournament. Lamine Yamal was bamboozling Konrad Laimer time and again, while Mikel Oyarzabal once again showed why he is such a reliable player for the national side. Pedro Porro also helped himself to a goal, as La Roja comfortably put Ralf Rangnick’s men to the sword.

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente will be very pleased with the performance and manner of his side’s win against Austria, which puts Spain in great stead ahead of this all-important Iberian derby.

The last time these two sides met was in last year’s UEFA Nations League final, where Ronaldo rolled back the years with a brace as Portugal beat Spain on penalties. We expect this game to go to penalties as well, with Portugal nicking it once again and Ronaldo scoring the decisive penalty.

Score Prediction: Portugal 0–0 Spain | Portugal go through on penalties
Venue: Dallas Stadium, Arlington, Texas, USA
