The world stands still as one of football’s undisputed greats goes toe-to-toe with the one that has been anointed to take the mantle from him in the years to come. Cristiano Ronaldo will take on Lamine Yamal as Portugal battle Spain in what is the fixture of this Round of 16, with the whole world hoping that it lives up to its marquee billing, with the brilliant nature of the recently-concluded Mexico-England nail-biter leaving fans wanting for more from this heavyweight clash.

Here is our Preview and Predictions for the game.

FIFA WC26 | RO16: POR vs ESP | 00:30 IST, 07 July, 2026

For a side that is as stacked and filled with quality as Portugal are, they have had a wildly inconsistent tournament up until this point in terms of their form fluctuations in each game so far.

They were laboured and passive against DR Congo, then bounced back to some semblance of cohesion in their 5-0 win against Uzbekistan, and then once again put out a stodgy showing in their goalless draw against Colombia to put them against Croatia in the Round of 32.

Against the last World Cup’s 3rd-placed team, the Selecao once again seemed to be just a little off the rails as they fell behind in the second half to Ivan Perisic, but a first World Cup knockout goal for Ronaldo and a late late header from sub Goncalo Ramos meant that they eventually prevailed after a dramatic ending that saw a supposed Croatia equaliser being controversially ruled out for offside.

The much-vaunted midfield trio of Joao Neves, Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes has just not got going this World Cup, with Fernandes logging in just one assist while Vitinha and Neves have been put under the scanner for being a little too safe and passive in their passing. Ronaldo himself has not been fully to the races, and his subbing off against Croatia was a very very gutsy move in the context of the game which eventually proved to be a success.

For Portugal to go through, they cannot afford these performances from the team and staying on top of their game remains paramount especially facing an opponent like Spain.

For Spain, it was a similar way to their opponents in the way they were playing until the game against Austria, where they put absolutely no foot wrong and played arguably their best game of the World Cup. Yamal was bamboozling Konrad Laimer time and again, while Mikel Oyarzabal once again showed why he is such a reliable player for the national side. Pedro Porro helped himself to a goal as well, as La Roja comfortably put Austria to the sword.

Coach Luis de La Fuente will be very pleased with the performance and the manner of the win which will put them in great stead for this all-important Iberian Derby.

The last time these two sides met in the Nations League Final, Ronaldo rolled back the years with a brace as Portugal beat Spain on penalties. We expect this game to go to penalties as well, with Portugal nicking it and Ronaldo scoring the decisive penalty.

Score Prediction: Portugal 0-0 Spain (Portugal go through on penalties)

Venue: Dallas stadium, Arlington
