The third day of the World Cup will feature a Group B game between Qatar and Switzerland to be played on the 14th June at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
FIFA WC26 | Group B: QAT vs SUI| 00:30 IST, June 14, 2026
As the host nation, Qatar participated at the 2022 World Cup for the first time. However, it wasn’t a dream debut as they lost all three of their group games, getting knocked out in the first round.
However, Qatar qualified for the World Cup for a second time after securing a 2-1 victory over United Arab Emirates in the fourth-round of the AFC play-offs.
Coming to their opponents, Switzerland finished their qualifying group with four wins and two draws, making their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance here in 2026. While Qatar is fairly new to the World Cup stage, Switzerland’s best finish at the World Cup is a quarter-finals appearance that they have achieved thrice in their history.
The two-time reigning Asian Champions have a few key players in their squad that can trouble the opposition. Striker Almoez Ali and winger Akram Akif are their standout attackers while Boualem Khouki is the mainstay in the defensive line. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos is also vital to the team as the most capped player for the country.
The Swiss are being captained by the experienced Granit Xhaka and boast a solid defence which only conceded two goals in six qualifying games. Former Man City and now Inter defender Manuel Akanji is another key player. The Swiss have ample firepower up front with several talented forwards in Breel Embolo, Dan Ndoye, Noah Okafor and Johan Manzambi.
Although Julen Lopetegui is an experienced coach, we do not see this Qatari side beating a European heavyweight. Being the weaker side, Qatar would like to sit in a deep defensive low block in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation to soak up the early pressure and try to hit the Swiss on the counter. On the other hand, Switzerland would want to control the game in midfield through Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler and also have their fullbacks high up the pitch to create width and channel for the forwards to attack.
Looking at the quality and experience in the two teams, this should be a comfortable victory for the Swiss and since they have a dogged defence, we do not see Qatar scoring a goal as well.
Score Prediction: Qatar 0-2 Switzerland
