Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction

Saudi Arabia kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a comparatively tough assignment against two-time world champions Uruguay, looking to continue the good start that has been maintained by the Asian teams in the tournament so far. Uruguay, on the other hand, will look to put their rollercoaster recent form behind them to get a winning start with a win here.

For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.

FIFA WC26 | Group H: KSA vs URU | 03:30 IST, June 16, 2026

Saudi Arabia are fast turning into World Cup regulars, with the 2026 edition being their third straight World Cup finals appearance. It is a testament to the rapid strides that they have made as a footballing nation.

Uruguay, meanwhile, have been World Cup regulars, but their performances in the last World Cup left a lot to be desired. After a fairly impressive run to the quarter-finals in 2018, they failed to get out of the group stage in 2022. They will be looking to do much better than just a group stage finish this time around.

The Green Falcons had a World Cup qualification campaign that was chaotic, to say the least. Roberto Mancini started the qualifiers, but was sacked midway through the campaign in favour of former coach Hervé Renard, who steered them past chaotic waters and sealed their qualification, only to be sacked just three months before the World Cup. He has been replaced by former Greece international Georgios Donis, who was managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Khaleej.

Uruguay’s qualifying campaign boasted a similar tone, if not a more chaotic one. Starting off on a great run, they were brought to a screeching halt before finally stumbling towards the finish line on the last day. The outrage surrounding coach Marcelo Bielsa was immense, but the recent string of performances in the friendlies has quelled those voices to a certain extent.

This is set to be a clash between two sides with chaotic styles, yet different in the way they bring about their chaos. Saudi Arabia will once again rely on their star man Salem Al-Dawsari to give them the attacking thrust up front. As far as Uruguay are concerned, most of the responsibility of making sure that the team do not have a rollercoaster tournament will fall on star midfielder Federico Valverde and striker Darwin Núñez.

The last time these two sides met in the World Cup was in 2018, with Uruguay emerging victorious by a solitary goal scored by Luis Suárez. We believe that Uruguay are the favourites coming into this game and should be expected to win the match with some degree of comfort.

Score Prediction: Saudi Arabia 0–2 Uruguay
Venue: Miami Stadium, Miami, Florida, USA
