South Africa and South Korea face off in this Group A encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup knowing that a win here will boost either side’s chances of reaching the round of 32.
Both sides need the win, albeit with different permutations, as this could eventually be the game that decides whether Group A will have two or three teams qualifying for the knockout stage.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
South Africa have thoroughly flattered to deceive at this World Cup, which they entered with a lot of expectation, only to deliver disappointing performances in their first two games.
In their campaign opener against Mexico, Bafana Bafana were given an absolute run-around by the co-hosts and were fortunate to lose by just two goals. The two red cards they were given in that game did not help their cause either.
Against Czechia, there was a slight improvement, but they did not seem to have any inclination towards taking the game to the opposition. It took a late spot kick to eventually earn them a share of the points — not the best way to announce their return to the World Cup after a 16-year absence.
South Korea, meanwhile, have been good value for their performances in this tournament so far. They made a stirring comeback to win 2–1 against the Czechs after falling a goal behind and were good for most of the game against Mexico before eventually falling to a 1–0 defeat.
The biggest problem the Koreans face is that, despite their free-flowing and front-foot style of play, they have been guilty of missing a lot of chances in front of goal, and none of the players embodies that more than their talisman, Son Heung-min. The LAFC man has missed some big chances, none more so against Mexico.
For South Korea to go to the next round, they will have to bury their chances with regularity, as they seek to enhance their goal difference as well.
We believe that South Korea will be favourites to win this match by some margin and qualify for the round of 32.
Score Prediction: South Africa 0–3 South Korea
