Spain vs Cape Verde | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction

Tournament favourites Spain open their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against African newcomers Cape Verde in this Group H encounter that will mark the culmination of something special — especially for the Tubarões Azuis, who are at the World Cup proper for the first time in their history.

For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.

FIFA WC26 | Group H: ESP vs CPV | 21:30 IST, June 15, 2026

Spain come into the World Cup having been playing at a level that can be considered comparable to that shown by the side from 2010, who had also won the Euros two years prior. Here’s a squad brimming to the hilt with talent, led by a manager who has consistently got the best out of the players at his disposal, and a sense of unity in the way they perform on the pitch. They managed to qualify for the tournament with relative ease and will be looking to add a second star to their jersey, 16 years after their first triumph.

Cabo Verde, on the other hand, made history by becoming the smallest country in terms of land area to qualify for the World Cup, before Curaçao confirmed their spot. Nevertheless, they also had a rather strong campaign that eventually helped them finish at the top of their qualifying group, including a win over African giants Cameroon.

Spain are a scary proposition for any side in this tournament, let alone Cape Verde. They boast a goalkeeping corps comprising three of the best in the game, each of whom can stake a claim to be the No. 1 for their country, a defence that is composed and experienced in equal measure, a midfield that ticks all the boxes in terms of physicality, endless running, and technical superiority, not to mention the press resistance that is the hallmark of any Spanish midfielder, and an attack that boasts arguably the world’s best teenager in Lamine Yamal.

For Cape Verde, their bare minimum in this game will be to stay in the contest as long as possible and frustrate the Spaniards to make the game more edgy and competitive. Using their pace-driven approach and a pragmatic defensive structure, they will look to cause trouble whenever they get the ball and the space to break the Spanish defensive line.

Lamine Yamal and forward Mikel Oyarzabal will be the key men for Spain up front given their recent form and the latter’s unreal levels of consistency for his national side. Cape Verde, on the other hand, will be depending on their defensive duo of Ryan Mendes and Stopira to keep Spain’s illustrious attackers at bay for as long as possible.

You cannot look past Spain to win this contest, and we believe that La Roja are the overwhelming favourites to take all three points here and make a winning start to a tournament many are touting them to win.

Score Prediction: Spain 5–1 Cabo Verde
Venue: Atlanta Stadium, Atlanta
