A free-scoring Switzerland come face-to-face with an Algeria side that have found their shooting boots as well as they face each other with Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic facing a Switzerland side he once used to coach in what is building up to be the Petkovic derby for a place in the Round of 16.

After what was a drab draw in their opening game against Qatar, the Swiss have bounced back in rather formidable fashion and they have the goals to show for it as well.

The star of this Swiss campaign has undoubtedly been Jon Manzambi, with the 20-year-old showing remarkable skill and quality in what is his first major international tournament, leading his side with 3 goals in the tournament so far. The established veterans like captain Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, Remo Freuler, and Manuel Akanji have all been pillars of consistency in a side that has relied on the right balance between youth and experience.

Algeria started their World Cup with a rather poor performance against Argentina where their goalkeeper Luca Zidane came under the spotlight for what was an error-strewn performance. They were on the verge of elimination after trailing to debutants Jordan before they sparked a remarkable turnaround with a come from behind 2-1 victory.

Their third and final group stage game was a masterclass in chaos theory as they were 3-2 up in extra time only to go ahead and concede at literally the last seconds of the game to eventually share the spoils in a 3-3 draw which is being called the “Non-aggression pact of Kansas”.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic will no doubt have certain ideas in his mind as to how he will line up against his former players given that he was the head coach of the Swiss National side for 7 years while also leading them to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so that is one advantage that is in his and Algeria’s favour.

However, despite the perceived advantage for Algeria, we still believe that Switzerland will enter this match as favourites and eventually win the contest.
