Switzerland vs Algeria | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Round of 32 | Preview and Prediction

A free-scoring Switzerland team come face-to-face with an Algeria side who have found their shooting boots in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Moreover, Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic is facing a Switzerland side he once used to coach, looking to get one over on them for a place in the Round of 16 for his current side.

For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.

FIFA WC26 | Ro32: SUI vs ALG | 08:30 IST, 3 July 2026

After what was a drab draw in their opening game against Qatar, the Swiss have bounced back in formidable fashion, and they have the goals to show for it. They first drubbed Bosnia and Herzegovina for four goals in the space of 20 minutes after a lengthy deadlock to emerge as comfortable 4–1 victors before sealing top spot with a 2–1 win against co-hosts Canada.

The star of this Swiss campaign has undoubtedly been Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old has been showing remarkable skill and quality in what is his first major international tournament, leading his side with three goals. His more established senior teammates, such as captain Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, Remo Freuler, and Manuel Akanji, have all been pillars of consistency in a side that has relied on the right balance between youth and experience.

Algeria, meanwhile, started their World Cup campaign with a rather poor performance against Argentina, where their goalkeeper Luca Zidane came under the spotlight for an error-strewn outing. They were on the verge of elimination after trailing debutants Jordan before sparking an admittedly remarkable turnaround to win 2–1. Their third and final group-stage game was a masterclass in chaos as they went 3–2 up in added time only to concede in the last seconds of the game to share the spoils, with the game dubbed the “non-aggression pact of Kansas” on account of both teams only needing a point each to reach the next stage.

Algeria boss Vladimir Petkovi? will no doubt have certain ideas in his mind in terms of lining up his team against his former players; he coached Switzerland for seven years, having also led them to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so his familiarity with the opposition camp here is one big advantage for the Desert Warriors.

However, despite their perceived advantage, we still believe that Switzerland are favourites to win this game and progress to the Round of 16.

Score Predictions: Switzerland 3–2 Algeria
Venue: BC Place Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
