As the new year approaches on the tennis calendar, it’s not just the four Grand Slams that entertain massive crowds and bring excitement and fanfare. There are many tour-level tournaments as well that are gaining attention and attracting huge crowds to tennis courts in various parts of the world. The men’s tour-level events are conducted by a global organization called the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and the women’s tour-level events are conducted by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Apart from the four majors, namely the Australian Open, the French Open, the Wimbledon Championships, and the US Open, ATP and WTA events are divided into several categories – Masters 1000, 500, and 250 levels, along with the year-end ATP or WTA Finals. Other levels include the Challenger Tour, and for senior players, there is a Champions Tour as well.
Here we take a look at the most popular ATP/WTA events that are conducted annually
The Qatar Open is a premier WTA 1000 tournament which is part of the Middle East swing and is held in Doha every year. The tournament will be held from 8th Feb – 14th Feb 2026 on the outdoor hard courts of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.
The tournament holds competition in two categories – Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles.
The Rotterdam Open is an ATP 500 tournament held annually in Rotterdam. It is one of the most popular indoor hard-court tournaments and is currently called the ABN AMRO Open due to sponsorship reasons. The tournament will be held from 9th Feb – 15th Feb 2026 at the Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The tournament holds competition in two categories – Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, alongside ITF-1 level wheelchair tennis singles and doubles.
The Indian Wells Open, or the BNP Paribas Open, is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament that is held annually in Indian Wells, California. It is an outdoor hard-court tournament that will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden from 1st Mar – 15th March 2026.
The tournament has four events, which include Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Miami Open presented by Itaú is an ATP Masters 1000 and a WTA 1000 tournament that is held annually in Miami, Florida. The Miami Open is an outdoor hard-court tournament that will be held from 15th March – 29th March 2026 at Miami Gardens, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The tournament features four categories for participation – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament that is held annually in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, which borders Monaco. The Monte-Carlo Masters is an outdoor clay-court tournament that will be held from 4th April – 12th April 2026 at the Monte Carlo Country Club.
The tournament features two categories, namely Men’s Singles and Doubles.
The Madrid Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament that is held every year in Madrid, Spain. The Mutua Madrid Open is an outdoor clay-court tournament that will be held from 20th April – 3rd May 2026 at La Caja Mágica in Manzanares Park San Fermín, Madrid.
The tournament invites participation in four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Italian Open, or the Rome Masters, is an ATP Masters 1000 and a WTA 1000 event held annually. It is currently called the Internazionali BNL d’Italia due to sponsorship reasons. The Rome Masters is an outdoor clay-court tournament that will be held from 28th April – 17th May 2026 at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy.
The tournament consists of four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Queen’s Club Championships, or the HSBC Championships, is an ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament which is held annually in London. This tournament is treated as a warm-up tournament for the upcoming Wimbledon Championships. It is an outdoor grass-court tournament that will be held from 6th June – 21st June 2026 at the Queen’s Club in Kensington, London.
Queen’s is one of the oldest tennis tournaments and began in 1881. The tournament features four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Washington DC Open, or the Mubadala Citi DC Open (due to sponsorship reasons), is an ATP 500 and a WTA 500 tournament played annually. It is an outdoor hard-court tournament which will be held from 25th July – 2nd Aug 2026 at the H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C.
This is the only combined 500-level hard-court event on the calendar. The tournament features four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The National Bank Open powered by Rogers, or the Canadian Open, is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament played every year. It is an outdoor hard-court tournament that alternates between Toronto and Montreal.
The men’s tournament will be held from 1st Aug – 13th Aug 2026 at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, while the women’s tournament will be held from 1st Aug – 13th Aug at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Canada. The men’s tournament is held in Montreal in even-numbered years, with the women’s tournament being held in Toronto, and vice versa in odd-numbered years.
After Wimbledon, the Canadian Open is the second-oldest active tournament on the tennis calendar. The tournament currently features four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The Cincinnati Open is another major tournament played every year. It is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament played on the outdoor hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. In 2026, the tournament will be held from 11th Aug – 23rd Aug.
The Cincinnati Open is the oldest tennis tournament in the USA and the third largest after the US Open and the Indian Wells Open, and is still played in the same city. The tournament features four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.
The China Open is an outdoor hard-court tournament held annually at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China. It qualifies as a WTA 1000 and an ATP 500 tournament. The tournament will be held from 30th Sep – 11th Oct 2026 in Beijing, China.
The tournament features four categories – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles. The ranking points differ for WTA and ATP players due to it being an ATP 500 and a WTA 1000 event.
The Rolex Paris Masters is the last annual ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season. It is an indoor hard-court tournament played at La Défense Arena in Nanterre, France, a western suburb of Paris. The tournament will be held from 31st Oct – 8th Nov 2026.
It is the largest indoor tennis tournament in the world and features Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles.
The WTA Finals is a premier tournament on the WTA Tour which features only the top eight ranked women’s singles and doubles players in the world, who compete for the coveted year-end trophy. The WTA Finals are second only to the four majors in importance on the WTA Tour.
The eight singles and doubles players are divided into two groups, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The WTA Finals will be held from 7th Nov – 14th Nov 2026 at the King Saud University Indoor Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The tournament features two categories – Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles.
Similar to the WTA Finals, the Nitto ATP Finals is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP Tour, preceded only by the four majors. The ATP Finals feature the top eight ranked men’s singles and doubles players in the world competing for the year-end trophy.
The format is similar to the WTA Finals, with the eight singles and doubles players divided into two groups and the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. This indoor hard-court tournament will be held from 15th Nov – 22nd Nov 2026 at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy.
