Top 5 Women Coaches in Tennis

Male coaches have predominantly worked with players on both the ATP and WTA tours in professional tennis but it’s quite surprising that women coaches have not been a part of top players’ teams in the past barring a few exceptions. However, this trend has witnessed a slight shift in recent years, with a couple of leading women coaches achieving notable success alongside their players.

Unfortunately, even those successful stints haven’t acted as a watershed moment in tennis and we see very few women coaches or mentors being shown the same level of faith and trust as the male coaches.

Keeping that in mind, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has also been consistently promoting women coaching roles through the Coach Inclusion Program that was debuted in 2022. We do hope to see more women coaches coming up in the near future but for now we take a look at the ones who have made a difference.

Here we take a look at the Top 5 Women Coaches past and present in Tennis –

5. Patricia Tarabini

Former Argentine Top-30 WTA Player Patricia Tarabini is also a top Women’s tennis coach who has been coaching Russian Player Anna Kalinskaya since 2019. She has also been a Mixed Doubles Grand Slam champion as well.

3. Anabel Medina Garrigues

Former Spanish professional tennis player Anabel Median Garrigues is another women’s tennis coach that has been highly successful. Garrigues was herself a Top 20 player who won 11 singles and 28 doubles titles on the WTA Tour.

The partnership ended at the conclusion of the 2017 season as Garrigues was appointed the captain of  Spain’s Fed Cup team. She led the Spanish Fed Cup team to the No.1 ranking as well. She is currently serving as the tournament director for the Valencia Open.

2. Amélie Mauresmo

Former multiple Grand Slam winner Amélie Mauresmo became one of the trailblazers in the women’s coaching  as she proved to the world that women coaches were as tactically and technically adept at coaching top tennis players as their male counterparts.

In 2013, she coached compatriot Marion Bartoli to her only Grand Slam title – the Wimbledon Championships without dropping a set. She also broke gender barriers when she became the coach of British player Andy Murray. Under her guidance, Murray won his first two Clay court titles (Munich and Madrid in 2015), reached two Australian Open finals and returned to the World No. 2 rankings. Mauresmo also coached Frenchman Lucas Pouille (2018-2020) and helped him reach his first Slam semi-final at the 2019 Australian Open.

Mauresmo also became the first female tournament director at the French Open in 2021. She succeeded Guy Forget and oversees all aspects of the tournament which includes match scheduling, maintenance and development.

1. Conchita Martínez

She coached Muguruza to her first Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships in 2017 as a consultant and then later helped her win the WTA Finals in 2021 as a full-time coach. Muguruza won three WTA titles, reached two other finals and finished the year ranked World No.3 in 2021.  For the consistent performances of her player, Martínez was also awarded the WTA Coach of the Year award in 2021.

She has helped her win two WTA 1000 titles in 2025, reaching the French Open semi-final in 2024 and the Wimbledon quarter-final in 2025. Under her guidance, Andreeva has really flourished and matured. She has instilled in her mental toughness, consistency and strength and also helped her to add subtle variations to her game.

Conchita Martínez is certainly the best women’s tennis coach on the tour right now and it’s quite scary how much improvement she can add to Andreeva’s game going ahead.
