Both USA and Australia opened their campaign with a win. While USA defeated Paraguay in an emphatic manner, Australia dealt a massive blow to Türkiye’s knockout ambitions with an upset.
Backed by the home crowd, USA produced a statement performance with Folarin Balogun being the star of the show. His brace helped USA defeat Paraguay and get their first win on the board. USA dominated proceedings in the first half and almost ended the game in the first half. The second half didn’t produce much action and even though Paraguay pulled a goal back from substitute Mauricio, too much damage had been inflicted in the first half. Geovanni Reyna then wrapped up proceedings in the second half stoppage-time to give USA a massive victory.
As for Australia, they upset a wasteful Türkiye side that created so many chances, yet couldn’t convert them and suffered at the hands of the Socceroos. The Aussies caught Türkiye on the counter as Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring with a superb touch and finish in the 27th minute. While Türkiye put Australia under a lot of pressure after going 1-0 down, they couldn’t finish their chances. The Aussies then compounded their misery with their second in the 75th minute through Connor Metcalfe’s stunning strike
Coming to this match-up, USA are definitely the favourites going into this fixture. However, they are sweating over Christian Pulisic’s fitness as he is recovering from a calf injury. Australia had very less possession against Türkiye and got away with a win but USA has quality all over the pitch and giving them so much possession would be dangerous. Australia can be dangerous on the counter, something the USA need to be wary of. Having said that, our prediction for this game would still be a comfortable victory for the hosts.
