Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.  made an underwhelming start to their World Cup campaign as they drew 1-1 with DR Congo, a team returning to the World Cup stage after five decades. Portugal has one of the best midfield combinations at this World Cup with João Neves, Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha forming the midfield trio. They also have a strong defence, their only issue is up front as they rely heavily on Ronaldo for scoring goals. This was particularly evident in the opening game as they scored from a set-piece through Neves early inside ten minutes but failed to create or score even after having 75% possession as Ronaldo went missing. They also conceded as DR Congo equalised in the first half stoppage-time through Yoane Wissa. The Portuguese tried to find a winner but the game ended in a draw as DR Congo held strong in defence to ensure a point.

As for Uzbekistan, they were defeated 3-1 by Columbia. As this is their first World Cup campaign, their inexperience showed against a strong Columbian outfit. Daniel Muñoz, Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz were on the scoresheet for Columbia while Abbosbek Fayzullayev scored Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup goal. Columbia had 61% possession and an expected goals (xG) of 1.61 as compared to 1.16 for Uzbekistan and even though Columbia controlled most of the game, the Uzbeks utilised their limited chances very well to score a goal. Columbia led by 2-1 until the 99th minute when Campaz scored the third and killed the game. Uzbekistan did well to limit Columbia but still ended up getting outdone by a far stronger opponent.

Portugal will be an overwhelming favourite for this game as they have players competing in the top European leagues while Uzbekistan has an inferior squad with not many players having had the experience of playing at the big stages. After the draw against DR Congo, this is a massive game for the Portuguese, a game they must win at any cost if they want to proceed to the next round. Coach Roberto Martinez will have to make the required tactical changes and the right team selection to get them the three points. Led by an experienced Ronaldo, Portugal is more likely to rise to the occasion and bag the big three points.

Score Prediction: Portugal 3-0 Uzbekistan

Venue: Houston Stadium, Houston, USA
