Following a blockbuster start to the season, we’ve come up with some interesting stats and records from Gameweek 1 of the 2024 Premier League season. So without further ado, let’s take a look at some of these stats.
Fabien Hürzeler became the youngest permanent manager in the PL –
New Brighton and Hove Albion head coach Fabien Hürzeler has set the record for the youngest permanent Premier League Manager when he led the Brighton team against Everton in the opening match week. Hürzeler joined from St. Pauli in the summer and he was 31 years and 173 days old when Brighton faced Everton on Saturday; not only is he the second-youngest manager in Premier League history- interim or otherwise, he’s also younger than five players of his first-team squad.
Déjá vu for Ipswich Town –
Ipswich Town returned to the top flight after a 22-year absence, with their last match coming in May 2002. On that occasion, they faced Liverpool at Anfield and were thrashed 5-0. Over two decades later, it was an odd feeling of déjá vu when they faced the same opponents in their first match of the 2024/25 campaign, although this time Ipswich were on home soil at Portman Road. Despite losing the game 2-nil, Kieran McKenna and his boys took a lot of positives out of it. .
James Milner playing in a record-breaking 23rd season –
James Milner is literally the man for all seasons with the Brighton man playing in a record-breaking 23rd season in the Premier League. He surpassed Ryan Giggs (22), Gareth Barry (21), Rio Ferdinand (20) and Frank Lampard (20) who are next in the list. Ashley Young and Johnny Evans are the only active players who have played 18 or more seasons and stand a chance of breaking Barry’s record. The quirkiest tidbit is that his own manager Hürzeler was 9 years old when Milner made his PL debut.
Mohamed Salah with his opening day shenanigans –
Mohamed Salah grabbed an opening day goal and an assist to give Liverpool a 2-0 win away from home against newly promoted Ipswich Town. With this, he broke the record for the highest number of goals on the opening day of the PL season. He now stands at 9 goals ahead of PL legends like Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer who have 8 each to their name. Mo Salah is also the player with the most involvements -14, in the first game of the season.
Amadou Onana with a dream start for Aston Villa –
Amadou Onana was subject to a club record transfer move from Everton to Aston Villa this season and his life at the London club couldn’t have started better. He scored a goal from a header within 4 minutes to become the fastest Aston Villa player to score on debut. With his goal against the Hammers, Onana’s goal is now the fourth-fastest goal by a player on his debut for a club in the Premier League. David Healy scored the fastest on debut at just 51 seconds.
West-Ham United’s London stay extended –
A very peculiar scheduling pattern has emerged looking at West-Ham’s match schedules this season. For the first 2-and-a-half months, West Ham don’t need to go out of London to play their games. They will play the first 9 league games in London – 5 at their London stadium and 4 away to Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur. Their first game away from home will be against Nottingham Forest at the City ground on 2nd November.
