Defending champions Argentina will face a tricky Switzerland side in this quarter-final fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 12 at Kansas City Stadium.

Argentina prevailed against Egypt, recovering from a 2–0 deficit to win 3–2 in regulation time. However, the victory was marred by controversial refereeing that broke Egyptian hearts, as they believe they had a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out.

That said, Argentina did show great powers of recovery in the last ten minutes to score three goals, while Egypt’s lack of experience in game management showed. They defended badly and gave Argentina a lot of time on the ball, which is never a good decision against a team with experienced World Cup-winning players.

Lionel Messi was yet again at the heart of it all with a goal and an assist. Before he arrived at the party, Egypt had stormed to a 2–0 lead with Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko on the scoresheet, but it was the lethal combination of Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan that threatened the Argentine defence throughout the game.

However, La Albiceleste once again looked to their saviour to produce a bit of magic, and he didn’t disappoint. Messi first set up Cristian Romero to halve the deficit and then equalised minutes later. Enzo Fernández then scored the winner in stoppage time to invoke crazy celebrations from the Argentine bench and fans. It was heartbreak for Egypt, but they made a match of it and will head home with pride, having reached the round of 16 for the first time in World Cup history.

As for their opponents, Switzerland have quietly gone about their business. They went unbeaten to top their group before dispatching Algeria in the round of 32 with relative ease. Against Colombia in the round of 16, they were not the favourites, but they stuck to their guns. While neither side created many chances, Colombia had the better ones and should have scored, but the Swiss were stoic in defence and their keeper, Gregor Kobel, in fine form. The scoreline remained 0–0 even after extra time, and as the ensuing penalty shoot-out was poised on a knife’s edge, Kobel came to Switzerland’s rescue again with a fantastic save from Cucho Hernández’s penalty. Rubén Vargas then slotted home the decisive penalty to take the Rossocrociati into the quarter-finals.

Injury-wise, Switzerland will be unlucky to miss out on an in-form Johan Manzambi as well as Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez, who are doubtful for this fixture. Argentina, meanwhile, don’t have any injury issues and may field an unchanged side from their previous knockout game.

Coming to this particular match-up, Argentina are definitely the better team on paper, but their form hasn’t been entirely convincing. Although the comeback win against Egypt must have given them a lot of confidence, they are heavily reliant on Messi for creating or scoring chances and defensively look vulnerable. Switzerland, on the other hand, have been solid defensively, having conceded only three goals in the competition so far. They have also had some top performers in Vargas, Breel Embolo, and Dan Ndoye, who will be keen to take advantage of the leaky Argentine defence.

If the Swiss can keep Messi quiet, they have a great chance of getting past the reigning champions and causing a huge upset. Argentina need their other attacking players to help when Messi is kept out of the game by the opposition defence, while also needing to defend better on the counter. Against Egypt, they were too easily bypassed in midfield, and Switzerland will keep that in mind.

It’s a difficult one to call, but we feel Switzerland can cause an upset here as the defending champions haven’t looked convincing at all. The Swiss will go into this game with nothing to lose, while Argentina will be under pressure. We believe this will be another tight and scrappy affair, but we’re backing Switzerland to cause a major upset.
