FIFA WC26 | Group D: AUS vs TUR | 09:30 IST, 14 June 2026
Australia have been a constant presence in World Cups, with this being their sixth consecutive appearance at the World Cup Finals. Their opponents, Turkiye, on the other hand, are appearing in what is only their second World Cup, which is a bit of a surprise given that they made it to the semifinals in their first-ever appearance in 2002.
The Socceroos had a rather tumultuous qualifying campaign, with genuine fears of failing to qualify after a rocky start that saw patchy form coupled with poor results. But the appointment of current Head Coach Tony Popovic steadied the ship, as results picked up and they eventually secured their spot in the tournament.
As for Turkiye, they gave a good account of themselves in qualifying. They finished second in their group behind Spain which took them to the Playoffs, where they took care of business by beating Romania and Kosovo to book their spot in the World Cup.
As far as style of play goes, the Australians adopt a fluid formation which alternates from a 3-man to a 5-man defense which allows them to play to their strengths, that is aerial dominance and defensive strength, making them rather difficult to break down. With the ball, they rely on quick counters after soaking in the early hits, enabling them to use their fresher legs to devastating effect.
Turkiye arguably have their best crop of technically superior players, and they rely on those skills to keep the ball for long periods while using the flanks to attack via crosses and cutbacks. Coach Vincenzo Montella has ensured that the chaotic way is now replaced with a much more controlled but equally dangerous style of play.
Australia will be reliant on Harry Souttar on defence, Jackson Irvine in midfield, and the likes of Nestor Irankunda and Cristian Volpato in attack. As far as the Turks are concerned, they have many quality players, but expect Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz to light things up for them.
Turkiye eventually prevails over Australia due to the tactical and technical advantage that their side possess.
Score Prediction: AUS 1- 3 TUR
