BBL 2025/26 | Match 9: Sydney Thunder vs Brisbane Heat | Preview and Predictions

The Sydney Thunder will take on the Brisbane Heat in March 9 of the 2025/26 KFC Big Bash League season in Canberra on December 22, 2025.

Both teams have had indifferent starts to their campaigns. The Thunder have lost both their opening fixtures, while the Heat lost the opener before registering a historic victory in their second outing.

Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.

BBL|15 Match 9: Thunder vs Heat | 13:45 IST, December 22, 2025

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Thunder, who have lost their first two games and will be aiming to tighten things up if they’re to climb up the ladder.

Despite coming out on the other side of the results, the Thunder’s batting has looked promising in flashes. Both Cameron Bancroft and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings have registered half-centuries, while Mathew Gilkes has also looked incredibly dangerous in short bursts. Lower down, Shadab Khan has been impressive and leads the team’s run charts with 75 runs in two games striking at 137, while the likes of Sam Konstas and returning skipper David Warner will look to get going right away.

With the ball, it has been a thoroughly disappointing start for the Thunder. Although both Reece Topley and Nathan McAndrew shared five wickets between themselves in their last match against the Sydney Sixers, the damage was already done by the Sixers’ top order early on in the innings.

Moreover, the Thunder’s spin department, comprising Shadab Khan, Tanveer Sangha, and Chris Green, proved ineffective against the Sixers. In what should be a similar deck at Manuka Oval, they’ll have to do a much better job if they are to contain the Heat’s explosive batting line-up.

The Heat, on the other hand, have begun their campaign on steady ground, losing one and then winning one. However, coming off a statement victory, where they chased down a historic 258 against the Perth Scorchers in the final over, they’ll be brimming with confidence.

It took two exceptional batting displays to chase down 258, with Jack Wildermuth blasting an unbeaten 110* from 54 deliveries to set the tone of the chase, while Matt Renshaw provided ample support at the other end, finishing with an outstanding 102 off 51.

With the likes of Colin Munro and Max Bryant also on their side and among runs, it gives the Heat’s batting order enough stability and explosivity to haemorrhage any bowling attack on their day.

Wildermuth has also been effective with the ball, taking four wickets in two matches despite conceding at 10.12 runs per over. With express seamers Xavier Bartlett and Shaheen Afridi providing cover with the new ball, and left-arm spinner Matthew Khunemann providing control through the middle, the Heat’s bowling attack looks disciplined and potent enough to test opposition batters.

In terms of pitch report and weather forecast, the surface tends to stay hard and even throughout, allowing batters to trust the bounce and play shots through the line. Moreover, short square boundaries bring power-hitters into play, although the longer straight boundaries can induce mishits. The weather in Canberra is expected to be cool and windy throughout the day, with minimal chances of rain late in the night.

Looking ahead to this contest, the Sydney Thunder last got the better of the Brisbane Heat in the men’s BBL back in December 2022; since then, the Heat have won all four meetings. After pulling off that record 258-run chase in their previous outing, their belief will be through the roof right now. The Thunder have struggled so far, with two defeats in a row, and it will take something exceptional from their attack to contain the Heat’s explosive batting line-up. Thus, we’re backing the Brisbane Heat to win this contest.

Fantasy XI: Colin Munro, Jack Wildermuth (c), Matt Renshaw, David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Max Bryant, Sam Billings, Shadab Khan (vc), Daniel Sams, Xavier Bartlett, Shaheen Afridi

Venue: Manuka Oval, Canberra
Winners Prediction: Brisbane Heat
