Best tennis moments of 2025

As every year nears its end, it brings an opportunity to reminisce, reflect and learn from our failures and mistakes. Alternatively, it’s also the time to look back with fondness and admiration at the moments that brought us joy and excitement.

The world of sports is a fascinating place that delivers myriad emotions to the fans with the chills, the thrills, jubilation and heartbreak – all being a part of following your favourite teams and athletes. Though Tennis is an individual sport, it has everything for its fans – intensity, skill, physicality and thrilling moments that stay with us forever.

So, without further ado, we take a look at the eight best tennis moments from 2025 –

Young Talent rising at the 2025 Australian Open

Young talent rose to fame at the 2025 Australian Open with two of the brightest young stars showing their skills on one of the biggest stages on the ATP Tour. 18-year-old Brazilian, Joao Fonseca showed why he is such a special player when he blew away a Top-10 ranked player, Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open. Though Fonseca lost in fourth sets to Lorenzo Sonego in second round, the left-handed youngster had earned plaudits from the ex-players and tennis enthusiasts.

Another exciting American teenager Lerner Tien surprised one and all when he won against former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev in the second round. Tien even made it to the fourth round before exiting the tournament. On the way to the fourth round, he also defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Corentin Moutet besides Medvedev. Incidentally, Tien also lost to the same opponent as Fonseca. Like Fonseca, Tien also showed that he could compete at the highest level against the top players in the world.

These two players showed the world a glimpse of their immense potential early in the season and that’s why their performances in Melbourne were one of the best from 2025.

The Inspiring comeback of Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic had an extraordinary season on the WTA Tour in 2025. Bencic made a return to professional tennis at the end of 2024, after stepping away in September 2023 as she was expecting a baby. Not much was expected from Bencic as it’s difficult for women players to return to the gruelling level of physicality and fitness required in professional tennis after giving birth. Though Bencic proved everyone wrong by making an incredible comeback.

When she joined the WTA tour, Bencic’s ranking had plummeted to World No. 487 but she rallied back in top fashion by initially beating top ranked players at the Australian Open, then winning two WTA titles in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo. Bencic also beat top-ranked players on her way to the Wimbledon Semis and ended the year ranked World No. 11.

Top players like the legendary Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters have made successful comebacks in the past. Clijsters was an absolute champion, winning three Grand Slam titles after giving birth. Even Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka have made a successful return on tour in recent years. Belinda Bencic is another success story added to this illustrious list of top female tennis stars who forged the path for future women’s players that would want to have a family along with a successful sporting career.

As a result of her achievements this year, Bencic was also facilitated by the WTA with the 2025 Comeback of the Year award. The former World No. 4 and Olympic Gold medallist Bencic proved that returning to the top level is possible with hard work, focus and an unrelenting mentality.

Gauff finally conquering her favourite surface at Roland Garros

The red clay of Roland Garros in Paris is Coco Gauff’s favourite surface. She has performed well at the French Open on several occasions but never crossed the finishing line before 2025. In 2022, she reached the final but was defeated in straight sets by former World No.1 Iga ?wi?tek in straight sets. Gauff had two more meetings with ?wi?tek in the 2023 quarter-finals and the 2024 semi-finals and ended up losing both encounters.

However, the 2025 edition brought her an opportunity to win at Roland Garros as she secured her way to the finals beating Madison Keys in the Semis. Though she still had a massive obstacle standing in her way in the form of the World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Both players started well but Sabalenka edged the first set in a tiebreaker. As it looked like the Belarussian would hand her another final defeat, the weather changed. Amidst heavy winds, Gauff adjusted her game, showcased better composure and fight to win the second set. Having gotten the momentum on her side with Sabalenka making too many errors, Gauff ended up winning the decider to take home her second Grand Slam title.

Though Gauff didn’t perform well at the remaining Grand Slams, she showed mental toughness and great defensive capabilities by coming back from a set down and winning on her favourite surface – a great moment for the American youngster and tennis fans in 2025.

Alcaraz’s show of grit and recovery at the 2025 French Open

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are the top two players in Men’s Tennis currently. They have battled each other for several major titles in the past few years but the 2025 Roland Garros would forever remain etched in history for the way it was contested and won.

Clay is undoubtedly Carlos Alcaraz’s favourite surface and he reached another final at Roland Garros in 2025 after winning the previous year. In contrast, Sinner likes the hard courts better and hasn’t been as adept on the slow clay surface. Therefore, the two players went into the final with Alcaraz as the clear favourite.

However, the unpredictability of sport is what makes it so special and beautiful. To everyone’s surprise, Sinner raced into a two-set lead. Alcaraz then came back to win the third set. Sinner had three championship points in the fourth set and it felt like he had conquered his most difficult surface but Alcaraz made a sensational comeback to deny Sinner the three championship points. He won the fourth set and then forced a fifth set tiebreaker to win an epic final that lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes. Both players displayed exceptional tennis but there can only be one winner and that was Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spaniard showed amazing powers of recovery to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and proved to the world why even at the beginning of his professional career, he was touted as the next big thing in Men’s tennis.

Jannik Sinner’s tale of redemption at the 2025 Wimbledon

Coming back from a deflating loss or failure is one of the hardest things in sport as well as life. Most fans and ex-players presumed that Jannik Sinner would take a long time to recover from the heartbreaking defeat at Roland Garros. But great players think and behave differently and that is what sets them apart from the rest of the crowd.

Sinner went into Wimbledon with the dejection of the French Open final looming at the back of his mind. He came through to the Round of 16 unscathed and was even playing like his usual dominating self. But Grigor Dimitrov came up against him in the RO16 and for the first time, the Italian top-seed looked lost for answers. However, Dimitrov took a two-set lead before suffering an unfortunate injury in the third set which forced him to retire, handing Sinner a huge reprieve.  The Italian then recovered his form in the following matches to storm into the final.

But waiting in the finals was his arch-nemesis Alcaraz who was playing in his third straight Wimbledon final. Though Sinner wasn’t deterred and had a different ending in his mind. Sinner lost the first set but unperturbed, he started to dominate play from the baseline and won the next three sets to take home his first Wimbledon crown.

Sinner engineered his own tale of redemption by beating Alcaraz soon after that disappointing loss at Roland Garros. This was yet another inspiring moment from 2025  that would be forever remembered for Sinner’s ability to reflect and learn from his mistakes and conquer his demons – indeed a hallmark of true greatness and a moment worth remembering from 2025.

A family final – Vacherot and Rinderknech scripting history in Shanghai

The Rolex Shanghai Masters is an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event that is held in Shanghai, China every year. This year’s edition was special for many reasons. Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot are tennis professionals who had been struggling to find a footing in the competitive world of Men’s tennis for a few years now and had failed to make an impact.

However, sport can be a huge leveller and the two players who are also related through family (cousins), found themselves contesting each other in the final of the Shanghai Masters. Rinderknech had a fabulous tournament defeating Alexander Zverev, Jiri Lehecka, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev enroute to the final. Vacherot also made an impressive run to the final defeating Alexander Bublik, Tomáš Machá?, Tallon Griekspoor, Holger Rune and the legendary Novak Djokovic on the way.

The two faced each other in the Shanghai Masters final which Vacherot ended up winning in three sets but it was an extraordinary showing from the two cousins who were ranked far below the top-ranked players they defeated. It was indeed a dream run for Rinderknech and Vacherot, one that would have given them a massive shot of confidence for upcoming events. Their run to the Shanghai Masters final was another highlight amongst the best tennis moments this year.

Anisimova’s amazing year on the WTA Tour

Amanda Anisimova had debuted on the WTA Tour main draw in 2017 as a prodigious talent. Even in her early years, the powerful American had produced top performances against the best players on the tour. However, Anisimova hadn’t been able to live up to the massive potential and also struggled with mental health issues which forced her to take a break from tennis in May 2023.

Though she has returned to professional tennis rejuvenated and much improved. The 2025 season has been her best year yet with the American reaching two Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. She also won two WTA tournaments in Doha and Beijing this year. Anisimova also reached the semi-final of the year-ending WTA Finals in Riyadh.

After having her struggles and troubles, Anisimova has finally shown her levels on the tour. She may not have crossed the finishing line on the two occasions in the Grand Slams but she has shown consistency and the ability to win tournaments. She also ended the 2025 season on a career high ranking of World No. 4.

For this reason, Anisimova was nominated for the WTA Player of the Year and the Most Improved Player of the year, winning the award in the second category. Anisimova’s growth and improvement has been an absolute joy to watch and we hope she can take it further in the coming year.

Rybakina ends a difficult year on a high at the 2025 WTA Finals

Elena Rybakina has had a rough 2025 season, performing relatively poorly at the Slams and also dropping down the rankings. However, she showed massive improvement at the year-ending tournaments to qualify for the WTA Finals in Riyadh and what followed was nothing short of a miracle.

While there can be no doubt that Rybakina is an excellent player who can beat anyone on her day, her inconsistency has let her down on several occasions. In addition, the Kazakhstani player was under a lot of scrutiny due to her coaching situation. Her former coach Stefano Vukov had been suspended by the WTA due to breach of code of conduct. Following her split with Vukov before the US Open last year, Rybakina went through a coaching change hiring the services of legendary Goran Ivanisevic in November 2024 but the two parted ways in January with Ivanisevic resigning after her exit from the 2025 Australian Open.

Rybakina had a fairly average season with only one WTA Title in Strasbourg and not even making the quarter-finals of any of the Grand Slams. However, with her former coach Vukov returning to the fold, Rybakina’s performances started to improve and she won the Ningbo Open in China and ended up qualifying for the year-ending WTA Finals. Rybakina then went undefeated in Riyadh and defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final to lift the prestigious WTA Finals title.

After a difficult season due to many distractions, Rybakina finally ended the season on a high, beating the top women’s players and winning a major title. This could be viewed as a sort of redemption for Rybakina who hasn’t been in the best of form for past few seasons and we hope this is the launchpad that propels her to achieve her true potential.
