F1 2026: Italian Grand Prix Preview and Predictions

Racing is back this weekend as the Formula One grid heads to the iconic Temple of Speed in Monza for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.

While Ferrari and Mercedes looked like they were in a two-way battle, reigning world champion Lando Norris’ back-to-back wins have brought McLaren into the title fight.

Ahead of the Monza race, with several narratives to keep in mind, here we present our preview and predictions for the 2026 F1 Italian Grand Prix.

Charging Kimi

Current Drivers’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli has had a mixed couple of races of late, having started the season with five wins from the opening six races.

Antonelli had point-less outings in Barcelona and Silverstone. He picked up three podiums in Belgium, Hungary, and the Netherlands; two of those races he should’ve won. Given the struggles and only one win in the last six races, Antonelli’s lead at the top has been cut down to just 59 points, and he’s now being pressured by teammate George Russell as well as Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. 

Mercedes have announced that Antonelli will be changing his engine for the Italian Grand Prix, which will hand the 20-year-old a grid penalty of at least ten positions. While the championship leader is set to start the race at the back of the grid, Mercedes expect Monza to be the perfect track to take that engine penalty. The straight-line speed the F1 W17 possesses will be ideal in Monza, and with a host of overtaking opportunities awaiting him, expect Antonelli to finish right at the front.

With the pressure beginning to mount in the championship battle, Antonelli will bounce back in Monza despite starting from the back.

The world champion has arrived

Back-to-back wins, one on either side of the summer break, have brought Lando Norris into the Drivers’ title fight, although he still has some distance to make up. 

The reigning world champion’s uptick in form has arrived on the back of McLaren bringing big upgrades in the last couple of races, allowing them to close the gap to the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari. What’s been working in McLaren and Norris’ favour is not only their pace on Sunday, but also on Saturdays, with Norris having taken back-to-back poles in Hungary and the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old won his first championship last season and has spent the majority of this season struggling to mount a title defence, but finally it looks like he has a shot at fighting for the crown. High on confidence, and with two wins on the trot, McLaren and Norris will come to Monza in high spirits, but it remains to be seen if they can challenge the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes on the straights. Norris isn’t a sure-shot favourite coming into Monza, but it would be daft to write him off. 

Pressure at home

While Mercedes and McLaren are looking like the two teams who will be in the battle at the front in Monza, one team who will be under immense pressure not only because of their race pace but also due to outside pressure are Ferrari.

At Monza, Ferrari have been the most successful team, having won 21 times at home. But they have won only once here in the last five years. This year, they have shown strong race pace, always being at the front for the win, but the usual strategic mix-ups continue to cost them, resulting in them sitting with only two wins this season from 12 races. Lewis Hamilton has already asked his team to amp up the pressure on their rivals in the title battle. 

Ferrari have the pace to fight the likes of Mercedes. On a weekend where all the eyes will be on them, the Scuderia must execute their strategies to perfection and make sure their drivers don’t end up fighting between themselves.
