Here’s our preview and prediction for the Quarterfinal match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025
FIFA Club World Cup 2025 | Quarterfinals: Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich | 21:30 IST, July 5
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Quarterfinal stage has some mouth-watering clashes in store for us and the match between the current Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and the six-time European champions Bayern Munich is definitely one of the most glamorous ones.
PSG were convincing winners against Inter Miami in their Round of 16 fixture, beating Lionel Messi’s side 4-0 in Atlanta, while Bayern beat Brazilian giants Flamengo 4-2 in an entertaining encounter at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Slated as one of the favourites to go all the way from the onset, Paris Saint-Germain have lived up to those expectations by ruthlessly dismantling MLS side Inter Miami in a first-half four-goal blitz from which they never fully recovered.
After a similar beating was handed to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in gameweek 1, this has been their most complete performance – albeit against a hapless Inter Miami defensive unit which has been struck with a number of injuries.
A brace from Joao Neves, a Tomas Aviles own goal and Achraf Hakimi’s strike at the stroke of half-time sealed an emphatic victory for Luis Enrique’s side. On the defensive front, Lionel Messi and co hardly troubled the PSG goal with Gianluigi Donnarumma saving Messi’s header and Luis Suarez failing to make anything of his chance during the second half.
However, there was a shock 1-0 loss to Botafogo in the group stages to keep them humble and grounded, although they still remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
Similar to PSG, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern have also looked absolutely rampant at times during this iteration of the Club World Cup, scoring ten past Auckland City and then four against Flamengo in the Round of 16.
Bayern raced into a two-goal lead against Brazilian giants Flamengo, with Erick Pulgar inadvertently heading into his own net in the sixth minute before Kane’s deflected drive went in off the post just three minutes later. Rubro Negro skipper Gerson halved the deficit, however, Leon Goretzka’s strike meant the Bavarians went in 3-1 up at the break.
Jorginho pulled one back from the spot ten minutes after the break after Michel Olise had been penalised for handball. However, as Flamengo went all out for the equaliser, Kane killed off their hopes with an exquisite take and an immaculate finish to seal the victory.
However, the fact that they conceded twice in their last-16 tie, needed a late goal to beat Boca Juniors 2-1 and lost their last group stage match 1-0 against Benfica – Vincent Kompany knows there’s a chink in the armour and so does Luis Enrique.
In terms of team news, PSG had their talisman Ousmane Dembele take part in the Club World Cup for the first time against Inter Miami – playing a good 28-minutes of football and thus will be in contention for a starting place in the playing XI.
For Bayern, they’ll have to make do without the defensive trio of Alphonso Davies, Hiriko Ito, and Kim Min-Jae. However, the reintroduction of Jamal Musiala as a sub against Flamengo means the German international could also be in contention for a start in this high-profile encounter.
Looking ahead to this fixture, these two European heavyweights have crossed paths quite a few times in recent years. The Bavarians currently hold a 7-1 head-to-head record in their games against Paris Saint-Germain – with Bayern beating PSG 1-0 in last season’s UEFA Champions League league stage fixture.
However, since then, Luis Enrique and his men have come a long way and their dynamism on the pitch has undone many oppositions. Thus, we’re backing the current French and European champions Paris Saint-Germain to book their place for the semis.
Score Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Bayern Munich
Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
