The Run-in
Argentina
Argentina ended their 36-year World Cup drought at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when they beat France in the final on penalties. Their star forward Lionel Messi completed football, achieving his lifelong dream and carrying his side to World Cup glory.
Being the defending champions, La Albiceleste are yet again one of the contenders for the trophy with this possibly being Messi’s last appearance at the global stage. Argentina has a highly competitive and balanced squad that can challenge any top opposition. Most of their players compete in the top European leagues and coach Lionel Scaloni has led them well in recent years. After taking charge in 2018, he has helped them achieve major silverware with the 2022 World Cup and several Copa América trophies in what has been a highly successful partnership.
The CONMEBOL qualifiers in the World Cup follow a round-robin format where all 10 countries play each other home and away. Argentina ended the qualifiers with 38 points finishing top of the table and ensuring automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Since they secured early qualification, they played the final few fixtures without much pressure.
Led by the best player of this generation, Argentina are once again the favourites. Key players for them apart from Messi would be Julián Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister, Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero, Nahuel Molina and Enzo Fernándes.
There is always pressure on the defending champions but we feel Argentina are good enough to reach at least the semi-finals stage at the World Cup this year too unless they falter and endure an underwhelming campaign.
Algeria
African giants and former AFCON winners Algeria are a top side participating in this group. Algeria’s first-ever World Cup appearance in 1982 was marred by a massive controversy. Despite winning two out of their three group stage encounters, one of which was an epic upset over defending champions West Germany, Algeria was ousted from the tournament due to unsporting behavior from Austria and West Germany.
Since the game between West Germany and Austria was scheduled after Algeria finished their last group stage game, both of them knew what result would ensure their qualification and knock out the Algerians. They stopped competing in their final group match after West Germany took a 1-0 lead as their players passed sideways and backways for the rest of the game. It was referred to as the ‘Disgrace of Gijón’ and broke the hearts of the Algerian fans.
The Desert Foxes have qualified for the World Cup after a 12-year absence. They secured qualification for the upcoming World Cup by topping their group in the qualifiers with eight wins, a draw and a defeat. Captain Riyad Mahrez and forward Mohamed Amine Amoura were the defining presence in the campaign.
Austria
Austria returns to the World Cup after a hiatus of 28 years and would have to compete in a tough group containing the defending champions, Argentina.
Coached by the former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Ragnick, Austria finished top of their group to ensure qualification. Their previous World Cup outing ended in a disappointing manner as they couldn’t get past the group stage. However, this time around they would be hoping for an improved showing.
Austria has a decent squad with popular names in European leagues. Captained by Real Madrid defender David Alaba, Austria has a well-balanced squad with other key players in Christoph Baumgartner, Konrad Laimer, Marko Arnautovi? and Marcel Sabitzer.
Arnautovi? has been their most prolific goalscorer, having bagged 47 goals from 132 appearances. Laimer and Baumgartner have also been one of their standout players through the qualification campaign.
Their recent form also bodes well going into the World Cup as Austria have been unbeaten in their last five encounters, with four wins and a draw. Two of their recent wins also came against strong sides like Ghana and South Korea.
Jordan
Jordan is making a debut appearance at the 2026 FIFA World cup after strong performances in the past few years. Finals appearances in the 2023 Asian Cup and the 2025 Arab Cup helped them gain confidence and achieve the dream of playing at the grandest stage in football.
In the Asian qualifying round, Jordan played 10 games, winning four, drawing four and losing two and finishing second in their group to ensure qualification. Forward Ali Olwan is their star player who propelled them to qualification with nine goals including a hattrick in their final qualifying match.
Although Jordan is making their first appearance at the World Cup, they aren’t a team to be taken lightly. Other key players to watch out for in their team are winger Moussa Al Taamari, midfielder Nizar Al Rashdan and centre-back Yazan Al Arab.
They have been placed in a tough group with Argentina, Algeria and Austria and it will be challenging to progress to the Round of 16 but if they manage to achieve that, it will be considered as a successful campaign for the Jordanians.
How each team stacks up
Argentina is the overwhelming favourite to proceed from this group and is one of the top contenders to go deep in the tournament and even repeat their exploits from Qatar 2022. However, they are placed in a tricky group and taking any of their opponents lightly will be a gross miscalculation on their part.
Argentina didn’t start the group stage games well in their last outing but then found their form and went all the way. This time though, coach Scaloni would hope for a better start as they have been in top form lately having won all of their last five encounters even with a heavily rotated lineup.
African giants Algeria would also be a threat to all the others in the group as they too possess an excellent group of players and having won a big tournament in recent years, they have the experience to navigate tough games under pressure.
Austria too have been in top form and could give either Algeria or Argentina a run for their money. However, they haven’t played at the World Cup for a long time and haven’t played against South American and African opponents frequently.
As for Jordan, this is their much-hyped debut at the coveted tournament and there really won’t be any pressure on them. Playing without pressure could sometimes lead to surprising results but we do believe that the other three teams are far superior in quality and experience and therefore Jordan would not be able to get past the group stage.
Argentina or Algeria could most likely finish in top two places in the group but Austria could surprise them as well.
Who makes it out of Group J
We believe that the defending champions will ensure automatic qualification while the battle for second place could happen between Austria and Algeria along with newcomers Jordan finishing bottom of the table.
