FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group J Preview

With just over a fortnight remaining until the biggest global sporting spectacle takes centre stage, national teams and their head coaches are making last-minute alterations before they step foot in North America to fight for a chance to lift the ultimate prize in football: the World Cup.

Keeping that in mind, we at SportsKhabri are bringing you a comprehensive preview of the group stage, analysing each team.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the preview of Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which comprises Argentina, Austria, Algeria, and Jordan.

FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group J Teams

  • Argentina (CONMEBOL)
  • Algeria (CAF)
  • Austria (UEFA)
  • Jordan (AFC)

The Run-in

Argentina

Argentina ended their 36-year World Cup drought at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when they beat France in the final on penalties. Their star forward Lionel Messi thus completed football, achieving his lifelong dream and carrying his side to World Cup glory.

Being the defending champions, La Albiceleste are yet again one of the contenders for the trophy, with this possibly being Messi’s last appearance on the global stage. Argentina have a highly competitive and balanced squad that can challenge any top opposition. Most of their players compete in the top European leagues, and coach Lionel Scaloni has led them well in recent years. After taking charge in 2018, he has helped them achieve major silverware in the shape of World Cup and Copa América titles, showcasing how successful this marriage has been.

The CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers follow a round-robin format, where all countries play each other home and away. Argentina ended their qualifying campaign with 38 points, finishing top of the table and ensuring automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. They secured early qualification and played the final few fixtures without much pressure.

Led by arguably the best player of this generation, Argentina are once again the favourites to win the World Cup. Key players for them apart from Messi this time around will be Julián Alvarez, Lautaro Martínez, Alexis Mac Allister, Emi Martínez, Cristian Romero, Nahuel Molina, and Enzo Fernández.

There is always pressure on the defending champions, and we feel Argentina are good enough to at least reach the semi-finals this year, unless they falter and endure an unexpectedly underwhelming campaign.

Algeria

African giants and former AFCON winners Algeria are a top side. Their first-ever World Cup appearance in 1982 was marred by a massive controversy as, despite winning two out of their three group stage encounters, one of which was an epic upset over defending champions West Germany, Algeria were knocked out of the tournament due to unsporting behaviour from Austria and West Germany.

Since the game between West Germany and Austria was scheduled after Algeria finished their last group stage game, both of them knew what result would ensure their qualification and knock out the Algerians. They stopped competing in their final group match after West Germany took a 1–0 lead, as their players passed sideways and backwards for the rest of the game. It was referred to as the “Disgrace of Gijón” and broke the hearts of the Algerian fans.

This time, the Desert Warriors have qualified for the World Cup after a 12-year absence. They secured qualification by topping their group in the qualifiers with eight wins, a draw, and a defeat. Captain Riyad Mahrez and forward Mohamed Amoura were the defining presence for the team in the campaign.

Austria

Austria return to the World Cup after a hiatus of 28 years and will compete in a tough group. Coached by the former Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, Austria finished top of their qualifying group to ensure passage to the World Cup finals. Their previous World Cup outing ended in disappointing fashion as they couldn’t get past the group stage. However, this time around, they will hope for a better campaign.

Austria have a decent squad with popular names who feature in top European leagues. Captained by veteran defender David Alaba, they have a well-balanced squad, with other key players being Christoph Baumgartner, Konrad Laimer, Marko Arnautovic, and Marcel Sabitzer.

Arnautovic has been their most prolific goalscorer, having bagged 47 goals in 132 appearances. Laimer and Baumgartner have also been two of their standout players through the qualification campaign.

Their recent form also bodes well going into the World Cup. Austria have been unbeaten in their last five encounters with four wins and a draw. Two of their recent wins also came against strong sides in Ghana and South Korea.

Jordan

Jordan are set to make their first appearance at the World Cup finals after strong performances in the past few years. Finals appearances in the 2023 Asian Cup and the 2025 Arab Cup helped them gain confidence and achieve the dream of playing on the grandest stage in football.

In the Asian qualifying round, Jordan played ten games, winning four, drawing four, and losing two to finish second in their group to ensure qualification. Forward Ali Olwan is their star player and propelled them to qualification with nine goals, including a hat-trick in their final qualifying match.

Although Jordan are first-timers at this World Cup, they aren’t a team to be taken lightly. Other key players to watch out for in their team are winger Mousa Tamari, midfielder Nizar Al-Rashdan, and centre-back Yazan Al-Arab.

Jordan have been placed in a tough group alongside Argentina, Algeria, and Austria. Challenging for a knockout spot from here will be difficult, but if they manage that, their campaign could be considered successful.

How each team stacks up

Argentina are the overwhelming favourite to proceed from this group and are one of the top contenders to go all the way. However, they are placed in a tricky group, so taking any of their opponents lightly will be a gross miscalculation on their part.

Argentina didn’t start the group stage well in their last outing but then found form and went all the way. This time, though, coach Scaloni will want a better start, as his team have been in top form lately, having won all of their last five encounters even with a heavily rotated line-up.

Algeria, meanwhile, will be a threat to all others in the group, as they too possess an excellent group of players. Having won a big tournament in recent years, they have the experience to navigate tough games under pressure.

Elsewhere, Austria too have been in top form and could give Algeria and Argentina a run for their money. However, they haven’t played at the World Cup for a long time and haven’t played against South American and African opponents frequently.

As for Jordan, this is their much-hyped debut at the coveted tournament and there really won’t be any pressure on them. Playing without pressure can sometimes lead to surprising results, but we do believe that the other three teams are far superior in quality and experience and, therefore, do not expect Jordan to get past the group stage.

Who makes it out of Group J

We believe that the defending champions will ensure qualification with a top-spot finish, while the battle for second place could come down to Austria and Algeria, with newcomers Jordan finishing bottom of the table.

Prediction

Argentina (1st)
Algeria (2nd)
Austria (3rd)
Jordan (4th)
