For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
FIFA WC26 | Group E: GER vs CIV | 01:30 IST, 21 June 2026
Germany began their World Cup campaign with a thoroughly dominating 7–1 victory over debutants Curaçao, with most of their attackers chipping in with either a goal or an assist. While they did concede to make it 1–1, giving their fans a few nervous jitters in the first half, they eventually made their quality count and got the result and goals to show for it.
Kai Havertz got a brace, Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha were also on the scoresheet, while fullback Nathaniel Brown impressed with his buccaneering runs from the left and helped himself to a goal as well. However, they will be wary of the fact that their defence was put under significant duress in the first half by Curaçao and will be looking to improve on that front against the Ivorians.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, got the better of Ecuador in what was a battle both physical and mental. Given that they were facing a side with arguably the best defence in the tournament, a battle of attrition was expected. But they acquitted themselves rather nicely, with their key players delivering for them when it mattered.
Skipper Franck Kessié kept things tight and disciplined in midfield. Yan Diomande showed why he is so highly coveted in this transfer window by bewitching Piero Hincapié on the right flank. And Amad Diallo came off the bench to score what was eventually the winner deep into stoppage time.
There has been some drama outside as far as Côte d’Ivoire is concerned, with forward Elye Wahi initially denied entry to Canada before eventually being allowed to enter the country. Wahi was detained on allegations of match-fixing, regarding which an investigation is underway.
This game is going to be a contest of attack versus attack. Both teams have some exciting forwards who can take the game by the scruff of the neck at any given opportunity. It is going to be a huge test for both sets of defenders.
Expect a lot of goals in this contest, but despite the even nature of the two attacking units, we believe that Germany possess just that little more star quality and talent in their ranks, which makes them our favourites to win this contest.
Score Prediction: Germany 3–2 Ivory Coast
Venue: Toronto Stadium, Toronto, Canada
