For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
FIFA WC26 | Group L: GHA vs PAN | 04:30 IST, June 18, 2026
Ghana qualified for this World Cup by topping their CAF qualifying group, winning eight, losing one, and drawing one game to ease their way into the showpiece event. This is Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup finals since the first one in 2006. The Black Stars surprised everyone in the 2010 edition by reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.
As for their opponents, Panama too qualified by topping their qualifier group in the third round. They sealed automatic qualification by defeating El Salvador 3–0 at home. This is Panama’s second appearance at the World Cup after the 2018 edition in Russia. Their first appearance was a forgetful one as they lost all their group-stage games and exited the tournament bottom of the table and without a single point on board.
Coming to their key players, Ghana’s star midfielder Thomas Partey will miss their opening game as he has been denied a visa by the Canadian government. Further key misses in the squad are winger Mohammed Kudus and defender Alexander Djiku, who couldn’t make the squad due to injuries. In-form forward Antoine Semenyo will lead the line along with the experienced Jordan Ayew. As for Panama, Ismael Díaz and José Fajardo will be the primary goal threats, while captain Anibal Godoy will control the midfield. Star midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla has been ruled out for the initial games.
Ghana come into this World Cup on the back of an abysmal run, losing four of their five recent games with only a draw against Wales. Panama, meanwhile, have fared much better, with two wins, two draws, and a solitary defeat in their last five outings.
Although Ghana haven’t been in form, they do possess more experience in World Cup games and have some really exciting talent that can trouble the opposition through guile and pace, though Panama can’t be underestimated. Both teams have defensive issues and haven’t kept a clean sheet in seven consecutive games. We believe this could be a tense, cagey affair that may end in a draw.
Score Prediction: Ghana 1–1 Panama
Venue: Toronto Stadium, Toronto, Canada
