South Africa will take on New Zealand in the first semi-final of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens on March 4, 2026.
For the game, here we present our preview and predictions.
South Africa have been the standout performers of this tournament, having won all seven of their games across the group and Super Eight stages. Their batters have stepped up whenever called upon, while their bowling unit has been top of the class as well. Afghanistan were the only ones who came close to beating Aiden Markram and Co in the group stage, while the likes of India, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies were brushed aside with relative ease in the Super Eights.
Skipper Markram leads the run-scoring chart for the Proteas with 268 runs, while the rest of the SA top- and middle-order batters have also been among the runs.
In their bowling department, Lungi Ngidi leads the list with 12 wickets, with both Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch close behind with 11 wickets each; South Africa are the only team to boast three bowlers with ten or more wickets each.
As for New Zealand, they would count themselves fortunate not to have got knocked out after capitulating against England in their final Super Eight fixture. However, this has been the template of their entire campaign so far this tournament. Despite making the semis, the Kiwis have been far from their best and are definitely underdogs — at least on paper — when compared to their opponents here, who also beat them during the group stage.
With the bat, swashbuckling openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen lead the run-scoring chart for New Zealand, while Glenn Phillips has also consistently contributed from the middle order. That said, the rest of the NZ batters, including big names like Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell, have flattered to deceive.
In the bowling department, surprisingly, Ravindra has been their highest wicket-taker for the Kiwis, while Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson are the only other two bowlers to pick five or more wickets, with the former poised to miss this game following the birth of his second child.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report for this game, expect conditions to be clear and perfect for cricket, though dew could play a role during the second innings.
As evident from the six games played here at this venue so far, the surface here at Eden Gardens offers a batting-friendly wicket, although there could be some purchase for the slower bowlers.
Looking ahead to this fixture, the Proteas are brimming with confidence and eyeing a second T20 World Cup final appearance on the bounce, while the Kiwis, despite their inconsistencies, find themselves one step away from another World Cup final, having lost the final of the 2021 edition.
Considering both form and recent match-ups between the two sides, we’re backing South Africa to win here and reach their second consecutive final.
Fantasy XI: Aiden Markram (c), Finn Allen, Quinton de Kock, Rachin Ravindra, Dewald Brevis, Glenn Phillips, Marco Jansen (vc), Mitchell Santner, Keshav Maharaj, Jacob Duffy, Lungi Ngidi
