ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024: Day 17 Match Predictions

With all Super Eight slots confirmed, we have reached the final Group Stage game of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and it is two-time T20 World Champions and co-hosts West Indies taking on the dark horses of Afghanistan, both of whom have already secured for themselves a Super Eight spot.

Here’s my prediction for the final Group Stage game.

Men’s T20 WC 2024 Match 40: West Indies vs Afghanistan | 08:00 IST, June 18

Two of the best teams in the event, both unbeaten, face off in the final Group Stage game of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan have looked like a force to be reckoned with. Their demolition of New Zealand proved that they aren’t here just to fill up the numbers. The conditions in the Caribbean have suited their strong spin bowling line-up, and their seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi has been on a tear with the new ball as well. With the bat, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have made sure the Afghans keep getting strong starts as the Asian team look like a well-oiled unit heading into the next stage of the tournament.

While Afghanistan have been looking solid in all departments, the West Indies haven’t been lacking either, with Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph being among the wickets, while Sherfane Rutherford, Johnson Charles, Brandon King, and Roston Chase have all had important innings with the bat.

This is sure to be a barn-burner of a match as both teams will look to head into the Super Eight stage on a high. I’m going for a bold prediction here, backing Afghanistan to prevail over the Windies.

Fantasy XI: Brandon King, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Johnson Charles, Ibrahim Zadran, Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph

Venue: Gros Islet, Saint Lucia
Winner Prediction: Afghanistan
