2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Day 2 Review

Day 2 of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup had two more games in store for us as Namibia took on Oman and South Africa began their campaign against Sri Lanka.

Oman v Namibia

In what was a thrilling low-scoring encounter, Oman managed to put up just 109 runs in the first innings. Ruben Trumpelmann starred with the ball for Namibia as he picked up four wickets and was helped out by senior pro David Wiese, who struck thrice.

A game that looked like a certain win for Namibia saw the side struggle to get ahead as they failed to cross the line in the final over. They managed to tie the game and took it into the tournament’s first super over.

Former South Africa international Wiese put on a show in the tie-breaker, scoring 13 runs and bowling expertly to keep Oman down to just 10 runs in their share of six balls.

First innings: Oman 109/10 in 19.4 overs
Second innings: Namibia 109/6 in 20 overs
In Super Over: Namibia 21/0 batting first | Oman 10/1 batting second

South Africa v Sri Lanka

What was supposed to be the fixture of the tournament so far surely did disappoint. Sri Lanka batted first in this match but failed to ever get going. Losing wickets at regular intervals, they were bowled out for just 77 runs, with Kusal Mendis finishing as the highest scorer (19 runs off 30 balls).

With the ball, Kagiso Rabada carried on his wonderful form from the recently-concluded Indian Premier League season as he bagged a two wickets for 21 runs in his quota of four overs. Keshav Maharaj picked up a couple as well, while Anrich Nortje stood out with 4/7 in four overs.

The Proteas had a regulation chase, although they didn’t find it quite easy to bat on this wicket either. Wicketkeeper and opening batter Quinton de Kock scored 20 off 27, the highest in the side, while Heinrick Klassen was there to see home the chase with his 19 off 22 alongside David Miller.

First innings: SL 77 in 19.1 overs
Second innings: RSA 80/4 in 16.2 overs
