Indian Premier League 2025: Looking at the playoff teams

As they beat the Delhi Capitals last night at home, the Mumbai Indians secured their place in the playoffs of this year’s Indian Premier League, becoming the fourth and final team to make it to the next round.

With all four playoff teams locked in, here’s a quick look at each of them.

Gujarat Titans

The 2022 IPL champions were the first team to qualify for the playoffs this year.

Shubman Gill & Co are having yet another strong season. Gill, his opening partner Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler have been key to GT’s success. At the top of the batting order, each of them has scored 500+ runs—a first in IPL history.

With the ball, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Sai Kishore have been stellar. Krishna is the current holder of the Purple Cap, while Sudharsan holds the Orange Cap, followed by Gill in second place.

With two games remaining, a win in either of them will confirm a top-two finish for the Titans as they look to add another title to their trophy from three years ago. Given that the final will be held in Ahmedabad, they’ll have the added motivation to lift the trophy in front of the home crowd.

Punjab Kings

Having won the IPL with the Kolkata Knight Riders last year, Shreyas Iyer has his eyes set on repeating the feat with his new team, the Punjab Kings.

Iyer & Co have impressed so far this season. The Kings sit third in the table, and the Titans’ win over the Capitals has sealed a playoff spot for them as well.

This will be PBKS’ first playoffs since 2014, when they finished runners-up. With two games left, they’ll be looking to finish on a high and secure a top-two spot.

Iyer, meanwhile, has become the first IPL captain to take three different teams to the playoffs, having done so with the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders in the past.

If they beat the Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians in their last two games, the Punjab Kings will finish the regular season with a total of 21 points.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Arguably the most unlucky team in the IPL, the Royal Challengers have finally turned up to an IPL season with a balanced squad.

While RCB have been dependent on their top three batters for most of the runs—as is usually the case—this time they finally have a bowling unit capable of winning them games. Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Krunal Pandya have turned the tables for them on more than one occasion this year.

Rajat Patidar & Co still have two league games left, and they’ll be looking to seal a top-two finish and get that safety blanket as they try to win their first-ever IPL trophy.

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians have—in classic fashion—woken up late once again. After winning just one of their opening five games, they lost only one in their next eight, with the return of Jasprit Bumrah further helping Hardik Pandya & Co get back to winning ways.

The top order of Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, and Suryakumar Yadav has provided plenty of runs, while Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Mitchell Santner have tightened the screws on opposition batters.

Mumbai’s win against the Delhi Capitals sealed the final playoff spot. And while a top-two finish is highly unlikely for the five-time IPL champions, they have the experience to step up in clutch moments during the latter stages of a tournament and go all the way.

The playoffs’ schedule is as follows:

  • Qualifier 1: May 29, 2025 | 19:30 IST, Mullanpur
  • Eliminator: May 30, 2025 | 19:30 IST, Mullanpur
  • Qualifier 2: June 1, 2025 | 19:30 IST, Ahmedabad
  • Grand Final: June 3, 2025 | 19:30 IST, Ahmedabad
