As we are well into the middle of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are sitting pretty at the top half of the table, looking like one of the more balanced teams in the league. They will face Delhi Capitals in Delhi with the Capitals looking to find consistency and will be looking to move into the top 4.
Here is the preview and prediction for match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The hosts have been struggling to find consistency not only as a team but also in the batting unit. Their top order barring KL Rahul is yet to get runs under their belt. The Capitals have gone with Pathum Nissanka at the top to partner Rahul but the Sri Lankan just hasn’t gotten going and with the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Abhishek Porel in the shed, Delhi might bring in some of the Indian talents to partner with Rahul. The no.3 spot has also been an issue for Delhi, with the team having tried out Nitish Rana, Sameer Rizvi and Karun Nair and it has been Rana finding some form off late, scoring back-to-back half centuries in the last two games to give KL Rahul some support in the top order. Tristan Stubbs and David Miller have been doing the heavy lifting in the middle and lower order and the Capitals will hope that their captain Axar Patel finds some form with the bat as well.
Lungi Ngidi has been the standout bowler for Delhi and while Mukesh Kumar has provided the odd breakthrough early on, he has been expensive at the top. The spinners of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have also been leaking runs and they will hope that the bowlers step up with the support seamers of T Natarajan and Auqib Nabi yet to provide any help for Ngidi either.
The defending champions on the other hand are sitting pretty in the top two in the points table with Rajat Patidar’s boys looking like a title contender once again. Virat Kohli and Phil Salt have been providing a good platform at the top and while Salt seems like he is finally getting some runs under his belt, Kohli’s consistency and the rate at which he’s been scoring runs is an issue for the team, especially if he doesn’t convert his slow-ish start. Another batter looking to find consistency is Devdutt Paikkal, who has had a couple of big scores but has struggled as well in a couple of games but found some sublime form against Gujarat Titans and will want to keep his form going as the tournament enters its business end. RCB’s captain Rajat Patidar has probably been the team’s best batter with Patidar looking like he has been batting on a different wicket, given how clean he has been striking the ball and Patidar’s quick runs has made up for the slower starts above him. The lower order has Tim David doing the bulk of the scoring with Jitesh Sharma and Romario Shepherd not having scored a ton of runs yet.
The bowling attack for the defending champions has been led by the Indian veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, both of whom have been stellar with the new ball and the death. Krunal Pandya’s attacking left arm slow bowling has carried the bowling in the middle order but the support act of Suyash Sharma and Rasikh Salam has been slightly expensive. RCB have gone to Romario Shepherd for the odd over in the end which haven’t worked to their favour yet and given that Shepherd hasn’t done much with the bat or ball, RCB could look at Jacob Duffy as an extra bowler or bring in the English youngster Jacob Bethell, providing an extra spin option as well. Bethell opened the batting for RCB with Kohli last game and while he couldn’t put a big score on the board, he will be looking to provide the team with explosive starts.
The Delhi ground this season has seen runs but has been helpful for the spinners with the odd ball gripping and holding. Given the batting unit of both teams, we should be in for a high-scoring game but it will be the bowlers deciding the game with RCB’s more experienced and in-form bowlers giving them the edge.
