We are gearing up for an enthralling Indian Super League (ISL) final for the 2023/24 season between Mohun Bagan SG and Mumbai City FC.
One might feel that there is an element of revenge for the Islanders going into this game after they failed to overcome the Kolkata-based side in the League Shield decider on April 15.
Both clubs played out exciting semi-final ties, during which Mumbai City FC famously came back from two goals down to win the first leg at FC Goa within a span of six minutes. They then put up a professional display in the reverse fixture and won the tie 5-2 on aggregate.
Much like Mumbai City FC, Mohun Bagan also had to show character and resolve after going down 2-1 in the first leg of their semi-final against Odisha FC. They turned it around in front of a packed home crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium and clinched a 93rd-minute winner, finishing with a 3-2 score line on aggregate.

Both teams have had several players shining for them these past few games. But not many have had the impact that Lallianzuala Chhangte had in his team’s semi-final. The left-footed winger has bagged three goals in his last two outings, making him the main man for Mumbai City FC heading into the final.
As far as the Mariners are concerned, it becomes extremely difficult to look past their forward Dimi Petratos. The Australian striker has been one of the most consistent performers in the ISL for the last couple of seasons and has notched up 10 strikes and six assists in the Indian topflight this time out. He’s the man to keep an eye on when Mohun Bagan take to the field in the final.
As far as Mumbai City FC are concerned, they are most likely going to be without left-back Aakash Mishra, who is out with an injury. He missed the second leg against FC Goa, which saw Mehtab Singh occupy the position in Mishra’s absence.
Additionally, deep-lying midfielder Yoel van Nieff will be missing the last game of the campaign due to suspension. In the Dutchman’s absence, Apuia will be expected to fill as a No. 6 and control the tempo of the game.
Looking at the Mariners, they’ve just got one major issue — Armando Sadiku will be missing the final due to suspension.
Ashique Kuruniyan will also remain sidelined after he picked up an ACL injury before the season began.
One positive for the Mariners would have been the introduction of Sahal Abdul Samad, albeit for just about 20 minutes in their last game. It will be interesting to see whether the creative midfielder can make it into the first XI for the final.
When the two sides have met in the league this season, both have won a game each at their respective home venues.
With the game being played at the Salt Lake Stadium, expect a loud atmosphere from the Mohun Bagan fans. With Mumbai City FC having only recently lost to their opponents at the Salt Lake, one may put down the Kolkata team as the favourites to clinch the 2023/24 ISL trophy.
