Logan Sargeant set for Williams seat in 2023

Sargeant’s confirmation depends on Super Licence points

British Formula One team Williams Racings’ team boss Jost Capito has announced that American driver Logan Sargeant will race for the team with Alex Albon in 2023. Sargeant will replace Nicholas Latifi but the Americans move to Formula One depends on him acquiring the Super Licence points needed.

Sargeant would need to gain the Super Licence points in Formula 2 this season and should he be able to get them, the American would be making the step up to Formula One. Sargeant is currently racing with Carlin in Formula 2 and is third in the Championship standings behind already crowned champion Felipe Drugovich and Théo Pourchaire. Finishing fifth or sixth in the Championship standings will help the 21-year old gain the needed Super Licence points. The magical number needed by drivers are 40 Super Licence points to make it to Formula One.

Sargeant, who is a Williams academy driver, recently made his FP1 debut at the United States Grand Prix 2022 which saw him become the first American to drive in a Formula One session since 2015.

Jost Capito, Team Principal, Williams Racing, commented,

“Yeah, we feel he’s ready to race under the condition that he has enough Super Licence points after Abu Dhabi, he will be our second driver next year.

‘He’s had one season in F2, and I’m a fan of getting young drivers as quick through as possible into Formula 1 because the series below, the cars compare to Formula 1 cars… so get him in as quick as possible and find out if he’s capable of staying in Formula One for a long time, which we believe he is. And his first year in F2, and he won races, and he has been qualifying very strong all these years in his career – and we believe he’s absolutely ready to get into Formula One.

‘Yeah, I think we can have a rookie because with Alex we have a still young, but also very experienced driver. He is established so well in the team, fantastic results, he’s working well with the team – so we can put the rookie alongside him.”
