Our Take on Former Referee Mike Dean's recent controversial statements
Our relationship with the match referees as fans of Premier League clubs is often a love-hate one. But if there is one thing that is unanimous in its decree is that all set of fans are slowly and steadily losing patience with the standard of refereeing in the Premier League season after season.
And just when it felt like things were going on track, with no incident or any major refereeing shouts bar the Harry Maguire incident against Ipswich Town last Sunday, the referees have once again come under the microscope following former Premier League Referee Mike Dean’s rather controversial statements.
Dean, whose officiating career spans for the better part of two decades, was recently in a podcast with former Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy where he made certain audacious claims about his refereeing days that have invited massive scrutiny and discourse about match officials once again.
In the podcast, he admitted to taking part in certain self-imposed challenges in the matches he was part of, calling the entire process “just joking about”.
He spoke about how he was challenging himself to see how long he could go in a game without blowing a whistle, which he said was 25 minutes (this was in games before VAR was introduced), and then about how long he could stay in the centre circle without moving, which he said was around 15 minutes.
All of these comments once again highlight how eccentric Mike Dean was, along with his penchant for being a diva in terms of the way he used to make games all about himself. But it also once again puts the spotlight on the referees and their seeming propensity of not doing their jobs right.
This is the same Mike Dean who in 2023 advised Anthony Taylor to not look at the screen because he is a “mate” and should not get “more grief than he already has”. Safe to say that he has not done his job properly and has also not allowed the others to do the job they are supposed to.
There have been so many decisions over the years that have been either misjudged or not given at all. For a league that prides itself on being the best and most competitive in the world, the quality of refereeing has been shambolic at times. And statements like the one Dean made are not exactly covering the English officials with glory.
Even if those comments were made in jest or to be lighthearted, the emotionless laughs of Vardy and his co-host said it all- they were not in the least bit amused, nor did they want to take this ahead due to the sensitive nature of those comments.
At this point, the jury is out whether Mike Dean may or may not have meant what he said in that podcast. But one thing is very clear. I believe that this is a man who, like his past, wanted to make everything about himself, and that has blown up in face rather spectacularly.
Dean’s remarks reek of an individual who is in desperate need of social validation, and in that quest, has put the rest of his refereeing peers to shame.
