Premier League action moved into Gameweek 6 after the mid-week Carabao Cup Round 3 action. While most of the usual suspects winning their encounters, the games were not without excitement, drama, and entertainment.
The big match-up at St James’s Park saw the Magpies rescue a point against the defending champions, while Chelsea and Brighton played in a six-goal entertainer. Brentford and the Hammers played out a tame draw, while the Toffees bagged their first win of the season. Arsenal grabbed all three points against Leicester in a stoppage-time surge, while Liverpool beat Wolves in a difficult game away at Molineux. A brave Ispwich side, meanwhile, drew against the Villains, while 10-men Man United lost to an attacking Spurs outfit.
Let’s take a look at all the action from Gameweek 6 of the 2024/25 Premier League season in a bit more detail.
St James’s Park hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Cityzens of late, and without two of their most influential players in Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne it seemed like even more of an uphill task. Newcastle, meanwhile, had injury issues of their own, with Alexander Isak their most prominent absentee.
City struck first through defender Joško Gvardiol to take the lead in the 35th minute when he linked up with Jack Grealish. They had another injury scare when Erling Haaland was brought down in a tackle, though the Norwegian was able to continue. Newcastle did come back when their forward Anthony Gordon latched onto a through ball and was fouled by City goalkeeper Ederson, resulting in a penalty. Gordon stepped on for the spot-kick and scored calmly to restore parity in the 58th minute.
The game opened up after the penalty and both sides tried to find a winner, with the best chances of the game falling to Sean Longstaff, who hit wide of the post, and Bernardo Silva, whose quick turn and volley was saved by Nick Pope in injury time.
An entertaining encounter, but Man City will rue playing out another draw in the league.
This game started in blistering fashion, with Brighton attacking from the word go. Some calamitous Chelsea defending saw the Seagulls take advantage through a Georginio Rutter header in the seventh minute. They continued creating chances for about a quarter of an hour before Chelsea started to settle down, with the visitors playing a dangerous high line.
The Blues equalised in the 20th minute through a poor back pass from Brighton defender Adam Webster, which was latched onto by Nicolas Jackson who passed to Cole Palmer for an easy finish. Palmer then scored again from a spot-kick for a foul on Jadon Sancho, slotting coolly to make it 2-1 in the 28th minute. The Englishman then completed his hattrick three minutes later with a stunning free kick. Brighton did score through midfielder Carlos Baleba in the 34th minute to make it 3-2, but Palmer was unstoppable as he found a beautifully-threaded pass from Sancho to score his fourth of the evening.
All six goals of the game arrived in the first half. The second half saw Chelsea continue to dominate and score twice again, but both goals were disallowed for offside. Brighton tried to get back in the game but couldn’t muster many decent chances.
For the third week in a row, Brentford scored inside the first 60 seconds, this time through forward Bryan Mbuemo’s terrific volley off a Fábio Carvalho assist. The Bees tried to double their advantage after yet another terrific start, but to no avail.
The second half saw West Ham try to assert dominance, and they soon found a chance thanks to a poor clearance from Brentford which was grabbed by Tomáš Soucek in the 54th minute, who put it past a flailing Mark Flekken. Brentford did try to force the issue but failed to capitalise on decent chances and ended the game sharing the spoils with West Ham.

Those on the blue half of Merseyside must have breathed a sigh of relief as Everton beat Crystal Palace narrowly to notch their first win of the season.
Playing at home, Everton were on the back foot inside ten minutes when defender Marc Guéhi toed in a header from Adam Wharton. The visitors applied the early pressure and forced a couple of great saves from the Everton defence.
The Eagles couldn’t double their advantage, however, and paid the price for their misses when the in-form Dwight McNeil scored a stunner in the 47th minute. He then earned himself a brace and his side the much-needed three points when a pin-point Jack Harrison cross found him in the box in the 54th minute. Abdoulaye Doucouré had a glorious chance to put daylight between Palace and his side when he fluffed a one-on-one opportunity.
Sean Dyche can finally breathe a bit more freely, while Palace are still looking for their first win of the season in what has been a dismal start so far.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal showed yet again their prowess on set-pieces when they scored two in stoppage time to get all three points and a crucial victory over a feisty Leicester City team.
The Gunners started brilliantly and were on the attack from the first whistle. Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener in the 20th minute from a pass from Jurriën Timber before turning provider for Arsenal’s second goal before the break when he found Leandro Trossard in the box, who slotted home.
The second half saw a reversal in fortunes when a Leicester set-piece saw James Justin’s header deflected into the Arsenal net beyond David Raya minutes after the restart. Justin then equalised with his second of the game with a stunning finish in the left corner.
Arsenal kept on piling the pressure, however, and, in stoppage time, it was again a set piece that saw them score through Trossard, who seemed to have scored, but it was given as a Wilfried Ndidi own goal. The Gunners put the result beyond any doubt when Kai Havertz tapped home.
Forest suffered their first defeat of the season against the Cottagers this week. They did score first through a Chris Wood tap-in at the far post, only for the goal to be denied as Wood was marginally offside. Neither side could do much else in the first half.
The second half saw a penalty come Fulham’s way when Andreas Pereira was fouled in the six-yard box, which wasn’t seen by the ref but was spotted by VAR. Raúl Jiménez converted the spot kick in the 51st minute. Forest did come close through Callum Hudson-Odoi’s strike that fizzed narrowly over the bar and Jota Silva’s shot was also saved by Bernd Leno as Marco Silva’s team got the all-important three points.
Liverpool’s trip to Molineux hasn’t been easy in the past few years. Wolves always make it a tough encounter, and this year it was no different.
It was a particularly underwhelming and disjointed performance from the Reds for most of the first half, the only good part being that they did not concede a goal. Dominic Szoboszslai’s effort from a glorious pass from Andy Robertson was saved well by the Wolves goalie, Sam Johnstone.
The home side defended well for the most part and also created some decent chances of their own. However, just before the break, Liverpool managed to find an opener from a Diogo Jota assist to defender Ibrahima Konaté, who rose highest to head home an unstoppable chance in stoppage time.
The second half saw Wolves score an equaliser courtesy of a disastrous lack of communication between Konaté and Alisson Becker, which put Rayan Aït-Nouri through in the 58th minute. Liverpool took the lead back instantly through Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the 61st minute, awarded for a foul on Jota in the box. Liverpool tried to score a third but couldn’t get a breakthrough, though they did keep the majority of possession to deny Wolves any chance of a comeback.
The Tractor Boys gave a great account of themselves against an in-form Villa side. Liam Delap found a cute finish for the opener in the eighth minute to stun the away fans, though Emi Martínez should have done better on the near post.
Villa started to take control of the game and equalised through a Morgan Rogers goal in the 15th minute. The second Villa goal came from Ollie Watkins in the 32nd minute, who headed home a Leon Bailey cross in the box.
The second half saw a lot of pressure from the away side, but they couldn’t get that elusive third goal to kill off the game. Delap had a glorious chance to equalise when he found himself 1v1 with the Villa goalkeeper, but Martínez saved the chance this time with his outstretched foot. Delap didn’t miss in the 72nd minute, however, when Omari Hutchinson latched onto a Ezri Konsa pass and released him in a counter-attacking move to grab his and his side’s second goal of the day, which ultimately earned them a crucial point.
The game of the week turned out to be a woeful experience for the Red Devils as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham ran riot at Old Trafford.
Spurs started in blistering fashion as they scored through Brennan Johnson in the third minute, but the credit for the goal mostly went to Micky van de Ven’s unchecked run from his own half to pass the ball to the Welshman for an easy tap-in at the far post. United were suddenly on the back foot and Spurs piled on more pressure with one chance after another.
Things soon got bad to worse for United when their captain, Bruno Fernandes, was dismissed for a high-footed challenge on James Maddison in the 42nd minute.
With the numerical advantage, Spurs soon doubled their lead through Dejan Kulusevski in the 47th minute when he found a pass from Johnson in the box. Spurs’ third came through Dominic Solanke, who flicked from a Pape Matar Sarr header in the box, completing the rout.
Bournemouth thrashed a hapless Southampton side as they ran away comfortable winners in this fixture. Playing at home, the Cherries scored the opener with a quickly-taken free kick as Evanilson slotted into the far corner in the 17th minute. Bournemouth continued to attack and soon doubled their advantage from a fortuitous Dango Outtarra goal in the 32nd minute. Antoine Semenyo then scored the best goal of the evening in the 39th minute to put the game beyond the Saints’ reach.
Southampton did score through Taylor Harwood-Bellis header in the 51st minute, raising a bit of hope, but couldn’t muster any clear-cut chances after that.
