Spain vs Saudi Arabia | FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage | Preview and Prediction
Spain will be looking to put aside their disappointing opening-day performance against Cape Verde as they look to get their campaign back on track with a potential banana-skin encounter against a fairly confident Saudi Arabia side in this Group H fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For the game, here we present our preview and prediction.
FIFA WC26 | Group H: ESP vs KSA | 21:30 IST, 21 June 2026
Spain could not have asked for a worse start to their campaign. Slumping to a goalless draw against Cape Verde was an embarrassing result for La Roja given the sheer disparity in quality between the two sides.
Spain did everything in their power to breach the Cape Verdean goal but were thwarted at every stage by their goalkeeper, Vozinha. On top of that, it felt like their overall performance was a little too passive. They dominated possession but moved the ball too slowly, allowing Cape Verde time to get back into their defensive shape. Despite taking 23 shots, only eight were on target, and quite a few of them were comparatively routine saves for the keeper.
Even the introduction of Lamine Yamal from the bench did not have the desired impact, with the teenager still making his way to full fitness from injury. Frustration was rife among Spain players as they eventually ended the game with nothing to show for their domination of the ball. Rodri’s comments on their opponents’ style of play after the game also did not win too many favours, as they sought to undermine the opposition rather than address their own performance.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, will be buoyed by their performance against Uruguay, where they were very good value for a point. The Saudis took the lead in the first half and were good value for it. They defended well for the majority of the game, but the pressure to hold on to the lead eventually proved too much as they conceded in the late stages of the second half and had to share the spoils.
Their performance will undoubtedly have impressed new coach Georgios Donis, who replaced Hervé Renard in the Saudi hot seat only in April. He will, however, want a little more adventure in attack against Spain, because sitting back against them can be a much more daunting prospect.
Both sides enter this game with a genuine chance of making it to the next round. While Spain were dodgy in their opener, Saudi Arabia were spirited; in this game, it will all depend on which side is able to beat the nerves.
While Saudi Arabia are known for their affinity for giant-killing, as evidenced by their victory against eventual champions Argentina in 2022, it feels highly unlikely that they will repeat the trick against Spain here. We believe the 2010 champions are favourites for the win.
Score Prediction: Spain 3–0 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
